My brother installed a new CPU, getting a DRAM error

He went from a Ryzen 2600 to a Ryzen 5XXX on an X470. He didn't update the bios before doing so but did download the file.

The computer does not past POST, motherboard light shows a DRAM error. What could be the most likely problem?

...why ask here instead of just updating the BIOS first to see if it's the problem?

Most likely causes, I'd say, are an old BIOS or a DRAM issue

There's pretty much zero chance that X470 will support Zen 3 on a stock bios, he'll have to swap it out I'm afraid.

Honestly dude, i've been out of the loop with computers as I took a different path the past few years. Most of the stuff that used to be second nature to me just isn't anymore.

Is the only way for him to update it by putting the old CPU in back in? ...he somehow managed to break a couple of pins taking it out. He's the kind of person to just get on with it rather than be more pragmatic. I have no doubt him being gung-ho and impatient is what lead to this problem in the first place - I even told him to update everything before messing around.

Yep unless the motherboard has bios flashback button.

X470f gaming asus rog strix. If not, seems like hes gonna have to find someone nice enough to lend a cheap ryzen off. Bleh. What a buffoon. v_v

Try the CPU first, some pins have no connection or just ground etc. Unless he'll damage more stuff fiddling with it!

Yes they are accounted for, I think they were actually bent and he tried to bend them back. D'oh.

Do you think it's worth trying the CPU with couple of broken pins or could it risk the mobo?

Shouldn't be, it'll just refuse to boot if it's too damaged.

As above Probably refuse to boot but how stable it would be while flashing is pot luck.

Well if you can't find someone local, he can always post the board/CPU but I am not sure I'd want him risking taking it out given how ham fisted he sounds.
