Right, so my brother is a PC gamer and doesn't really care if you know what i mean. He doesn't know his PC spec, apart from his bragging rights to his mates of owning a 970.

Spec:
i5 - 4670 @ 3.4Ghz (Turbo boost to 3.8Ghz)
8 GB Ram
Gigabyte GTX970 Windforce G1 gaming edition.
650W PSU
Asus something mobo.

Its a micro ATX build with a really **** case.
He's only 15 so can't get a job and the only money he gets his for birthday and christmas. This christmas he needed a new GPU as the rest of his system was fine. He decided by himself which parts to get, getting the 970, psu and case (needed as the gpu is huge).

Now, he has a BIG cooling problems.

I have only recently got back into computers and spec that sort of stuff so at the time i didn't think of doing some research myself, he got all the parts, i had to fit them, was slightly concerned when building due to lack of fans in the case but thought what I THOUGHT he used it for it would be fine. turns out that he does a lot of rendering also for youtube and stuff and he started complaining that the 970 wasn't performing as well as he had hoped.

I thought, i'll get him to run a temp monitoring program and see what he's getting on the cpu and overall and i was amazed. We both turned on Elite at the same time and monitoring temps and during full game he managed to get temps of 70 degrees.

He is running the stock Intel CPU Cooler and looking at it earlier his case only has one extra fan!!! as an exhaust at the back.

He cannot afford to replace the case and fans so i was going to, being the good brother i am, buy him a new case and donate a couple of the fans from my case as i am buying new ones.

I can't really afford to spend loads on him, like around £30 to be honest, I spent over £500 on my PC, oops

What do you guys recommend? I am really worried he's going to **** his PC and then he'll be stuck.

I apologize for the essay :p

Thanks,
Sam

Really? I was comparing it to mine and we done the same thing, i got a max of 57 degrees.

It just seems a bit high that's all? and this was only after like 5 minutes of gaming..

Tbh 70c on a gpu is grand, and those cpu temps look about right too for a stock cooler. Id be delighted tbh if i could keep my top gpu at 70c. As it's a small case, sticking in a more powerful intake fan will maybe help. As for the gpu, try setting a custom fan curve in a program like afterburner. I use a 1-1 ratio. Ie, 50% fan speed at 50c, 60% at 60c etc. Iirc when running a single card, in games it would hit 74c on the auto fan profile. Changing to the 1-1 setting i never seen it go over 67c.

Really? i thought they seemed really hot. I know haswells run hot but i thought that was a bit too much for a stock cpu.

I am not able to put an intake fan on as it does not have space for one.. I think i am able to put one on the side shall i do this?

Okay, i shall look into the GPU side of things

The stock intel cooler is rubbish mate, i was getting 50c at idle on the one day i had to use it on the spec in sig, that was at stock. Got my proper cooler back on and idle temps in mid 20's, load temps in the mid 50's.

Are they really that bad!? I'm surprised they would even send them out. I might just get him the cpu cooler i've got then stick a fan on the side just for piece of mind. He does spend 5 hours plus every single day on it

Yep, theyre shockingly poor bud. I wish they wouldnt bother with them either, would cut down on cost a bit too. A better cpu cooler and intake fan could help a good deal. And as he has a G1 windforce cooled card, this model adds a bit of heat to the case due to its triple fan cooler. This can also up cpu temps, as i can attest to as i run two cards with the same cooler.

stock cooler is trash for haswell.

Just buy and fit a nice cheap £20 aftermarket cooler for him. and an intake fan.

Just switching the cpu cooler will make a massive difference in noise i would imagine, would be worth just for that imo

Okay, i think i shall do this. I've got a fan he can have and probably one to put in the PSU as well so i shall buy a cooler tomorrow. Anyone to recommend?
