I am on upto 52mbit and today line dropped, so I checked the router to see if the sync speed had decreased and my upload has randomly increased to 16.63mbit.

Data rate: 16.63 Mbps / 48.55 Mbps
Maximum data rate: 16434 / 58915

Anyone else getting this?

Something free is nice, but it just leave me wondering why they are doing it. No one will now take their infinity 2 package.

It’s an easy/cheap way to bump up your national average connection speed stats if perhaps some conditional funding existed based on them or you simply wished to show that you had fulfilled commitments you’d made to reaching a declared level or massage your stats to show improvements. The wholesale cost difference relative to the gains is cheaper/less labour intensive than actually laying fibre and getting people to pay for it etc.

at our old place we got a free bump in speed. On the 40/2 package with talk talk and they changed it to 40/10. It means gamers like me can now stream games online :)

That's pretty depressing given it means our options for better bandwidth will suffer/be delayed as a result.

Or it could be because they are planning to introduce two g.fast packages and don't want 5 didn't packages.

The current coverage is so insignificantly small it's unlikely to be an issue. Besides, you want to differentiate your top tier product, not loose it in the 'same product we always sell 2' bandwagon.
