My build- constructive criticism/help please!

Yeah air. Much underrated cases - near enough silent too.

We did question his temps and got various bits of monitoring software and it all said roughly the same.

+1 to antec psu I have the 750 version. No problems at all.

+1 to 470 it is worth it. As for temps I would suggest getting your airflow right in case to disperse the hot air and bring cool air in.

What kind of power should I be thinking for this setup? I'm guessing 500W, or would this not be enough?

I think 500W is enough. I learnt the hard way that it's better to get a bit more than you need, they aren't 100% efficient and degrade over time. I've had two Antec TruePower PSUs and have been completely happy with them, they start at 650W which is why I recommend that one to you.

So how big is the difference between 460 and 470?

Is it reasonable to be able to expect to play a game on the highest possible settings with a 460, or not?

And as for airflow, How do I get it right, apart from making sure all the fans are the right way around lol.

They actually start at 550w, but that psu has disappeared from this site, probably to be replaced by the high current range.

the difference is enough, its got a decent improvement in minimum frame rates to help keep games smooth

A GTX470 exhausts its hot air straight out the back so no worries there, the coolermaster 430 is a good case with good airflow.

About 30'C lol. They really are famous for being too hot - I don't know why people keep suggesting them.
Read: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/2010/03/27/nvidia-geforce-gtx-480-1-5gb-review/10

There is a performance difference though, but it's not worth it!

Yes - but not at top resolutions on the most demanding games.

Fill all the fan slots. Intake: front/side. Out: back/top. Try to keep cables out the way. -Job done.
Then it's down to quieter components and a better case, but they all cost more.

So you link to a GTX480 review when the GTX470 is being discussed? why is the two gpus temps identical in that canyon flight? you would expect the GTX480 to be higher no? flawed review.

performance difference - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/180?vs=160

No because it's Delta T.

The anandtech says the 470 hit 92 degrees! That's a card-damaging temperature.
The 460 was sat happily at 74 - I'd expect the Gigabyte cooler to be lower than this.
Both cards perform fine upto/including 1920x1200.

Why is it a "card damaging temperature"? it works as intended/within spec, or did you secretly design this card and know more about it than Nvidias technicians and multi million pound R+D department?:D

The nvidia site says the max operating temp of the 470 is 105'C. That review said they had a peak of 92'C.
Introduce a standard-issue summer day, and a multi-million pound marketing department - and your card is dead.

I have observed hundreds of threads by posters with extreme artefacts (caused by damaged video ram),
when asked they stated their temperatures were running at 80c or above.

This indicates that running a card over 80'c damages video ram.

From the first 4 pages of your thread:

Max GPU Temp: 93°C
Max GPU Temp: 86°C
Max GPU Temp: 81°C
Max GPU Temp: 95°C

No I've never used a 470. I'm trying to help the OP buy the card that's best for him, there's no point arguing about this, the facts are here for all to see. nn all.

I'll be gaming in 1080 and no higher, so Should I be ok with the 460? I could consider SLI when I have some more money, no?

And the CPU cooler, is that cool too (pun intended)? I'd probably do some mild overclocking.

Nobody has mentioned the RAM so I assume that's upto scratch?

Nice little debate about the temps guys, I suppose this kind of thing is healthy cause it helps get the facts straight.

EDIT: Just so you all know I appreciate all of your help and input, wether you're right or wrong I'm grateful for the effort.

460 is plenty fine. Probably not SLI, you'll be better off replacing the card with a newer model when the time comes. SLI often comes with various driver niggles, plus if you don't have much PSU headroom you might have to replace that too.

You could go with the Gelid Tranquilo for mild overclocking. Freezer 7 is really just a cheap improvement over the stock cooler at stock voltage.

Yep - perfect.

s'pose

I'm using the gtx 460 and many games run at max. I am playing Starcraft II @ max. Crysis in 1080p looks beautiful, just be a little shy with the AA.
These cards overclock very well and I would suggest looking at either:

The Titan fenrir evo is a quality air cooler: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-010-TI

I agree these discussions help.
