My Car Woes

Nearly a year since the accident?? Wow, I'd want some compensation for being without my car for that length of time! Unbelievable really! At least you have it back now and it sounds like it has finally been repaired to a good standard.

Cheers guys, has been a bit of a drama. Just glad it's almost over.

Yeah cheers Will Gill, I will try take it to Synter Cov and get them to do another KDS alignment and see how it is. Will run this over with the insurance today.

Compensation wise the wonderful woman who is handling my case is meant to be calling me today after discussing with her manager what kind of compensation they will provide. They've already said they will reimburse my insurance as I've been paying for a 2.5 litre BMW but have actually been driving 1.2 - 1.6 fiats, vauxhals and fords. I'm not really one to want anything for free so the reimbursement is all I stated I wished for but she said she will see what else they can provide.

Doesn't really matter as long as you get a decent freebie.

:(

moral of this story is

HELPHIRE

I know, I was just a bit naive. Any future accidents (god forbid) I will be on everything like a hawk.

Looking to the future - any idea what you're going to get next?

Honestly I think I am finally decided, after quite a while of looking and test driving things then being def cert on one idea before getting into a love affair with another idea and upping my budget even more, it's been quite a journey.

I went to see a few different cars, first off it was 6-series which I still really like but decided I should spend more and get a 911 instead, but I wasn't comfortable in the 996 (being a big chap) and couldn't afford a 997 because I want a Turbo so that idea was out. I stupidly went to see a Noble M12 after but I'm too fat for those seats :o

I then thought I'd lower my budget a bit and go for a 335 convertible after falling for the idea of a nice slick convertible, but I was warned against these on the forum (I think Fox) and I found out why after test driving one, there was no real sensation of power or speed, it was all just a bit dull to drive.

I also had the idea of an Evo X so I went to test drive one (but it was "only" an FQ-330) but I had the same feeling in that, I didn't really get the "umph" from the car, I mean it was obviously a very fast car but I just didn't feel the sensation I was after. I did, however, absolutely love its SST gearbox, that was so nice and easy/relaxing but they didn't do that in the higher powered models. Another issue with the Evo was the interior, it was just so simple and kept making me think that I'd regret swapping my BMW for it (silly I know, but it's how I felt).

I then saw an M5 next to all these other exotic/luxury cars driving past a dealership and my attention just kept getting drawn back to the M5, I drove circles to go past it a couple of times too :D. I've always loved BMWs, especially the M's (even the M6) so I had to try it. After a test drive I loved it, it has all the gadgets I craved after being in loads of other modern cars, it has the extra room that I crave when I can't fit people/stuff in my car, it has the sensation of speed that I crave that the E93 and Evo didn't have, and it had the appeal which drew my eyes away from other exotic metal towards it. It is also a BMW, I'm not sure why that should matter but I personally feel I would be happier getting rid of mine for another one. The only issue I had with it was the gearbox... man that thing was really frustrating! It is still the only thing putting doubt in my mind, I keep thinking maybe I should up my budget again and get a 997, but then I think perhaps I should wait a teeny bit longer and save for a DB9... but then I slap myself for being stupid and fall back to the M5.

I just got off the phone with Sytner Canary Wharf about a Used Approved I enquired about online whilst I was in Canada but they said it's been sold but that's alright as even though it ticked all my mileage/age/specification boxes it was silver not black, he emailed me another one though in Sheffield though which is black and has all the spec I am after except for the 19" double spoke alloys :( As soon as I find the perfect one I'm going to snap it up :D

How much are the wheels going to cost? A couple grand? I can just wait till the perfect one comes along, I have no need to rush. As a bonus these seem to be dropping in price daily so the longer it takes to find a good one the better I guess. It's simply the kid in me which wants me to hurry up and buy it, but I can be sensible and wait for the perfect one.

Whilst I have your attention Fox, what's your opinion of buying say a Hamann tuned version or similar? My friend put me down on the idea saying it would be much more unreliable and wouldn't be covered by BMW warranty, it would also be so hard to re-sell in a few years. I've seen a few different tuned M5s on the market but have been quite weary, they do appeal to me as they look nicer as well as having the performance edge, I'm just a bit sceptical if it is a good buy or not?

You can sell the existing wheels and just buy new wheels, it wont cost a couple of grand?

Wouldnt touch a tuned version for warranty reasons.

Are there good warranties you can get out on cars like that? Probably not worth the hassle though really.

In regards to the wheels, I guess you're right. There were a couple other niggles with it which put me off too, mileage wise it's 42k where I wanted 40k max but 2k isn't really here or there, also the interior was black which was slightly lower on my preference list.

Back on topic, my insurance called back and is going to talk to the Insurance engineer who has been handling my case about the wing mirror and the twitchy-ness. So we'll see tomorrow how it goes.

Apparently so, however there are the moral implications of usingsuch a company as they are causing insurance prices to increase for everyone due to the large monetary amounts of their claims (flash hire cars and such).

Just seen this thread after i googled UK Assistance. Our car was hit whilst parked on our driveway in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It is currently at UK Assistance waiting to be assessed. I think after reading this and other peoples problems on the net I will be phoning the insurance today.

Can i insist on the main dealer doing the repairs or at least a VW approved repairer? It is an 03 Polo so tbh I am expecting it to be wrote off (front wing, door, bumper, grill, sill, alloy wheel).

I'm now sorted. Car is not a write off according to UK Assistance. I have phoned and insisted it be fixed at a VW approved body shop.

They tried to fob me off with the the work is warrantied for 5 year.

Its now off to the local VW/Audi specialist.
