Hello,

I've been looking around on OC for a while now and been reading the forums too, and have finally decided buy a new setup which should last me few years.

Currently I have a computer with:
- X-Blade case
- AMD Phenom X4 9950 @ 2.6ghz
- H50 cooler (32c idle, 45C under load)
- M3A-H/HDMI motherboard
- 80gig Intel X25-M G2 SSD
- 6gig GEIL DDR2 800 CL5.0 DUAL CHANNEL ram
- 4870X2 - not over clocked, very loud once the fan is at 50% or more
- 700-watt PS

I got the H50 cooler thinking I'd over clock the CPU but it's been nothing but blue screen of death for every little attempt, I am guessing it's due to the cheap motherboard?

I have 3 screens setup for work, and one of them is a 24" HD viewsonic.

I am considering getting the Ultima Vanquish with 5870 Crossfire.

- Case: Antec 902 Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
- Power Supply: Corsair TX 750W ATX SLi Compliant Power Supply
- CPU: Intel Core i7 930 2.80GHz Overclocked to 4.00GHz
- Motherboard: Gigabyte EX58A-UD3R Intel X58 (Socket 1366) PCI-Express DDR3 Motherboard
- Cooler: Prolimatech Megahalems Rev B CPU Cooler with 2000RPM Sharkoon Silent Eagle 120mm
- RAM: Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 (1600MHz) Tri-Channel
- Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache
- Graphics Card: Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024MB GDDR5
- Sound: 7.1 Channel Sound (On-Board)
- Optical Drive: LG DVD+/-RW SATA Drive

If someone could answer these question please, that will be great!

1. On paper, the hardware looks to be a big improvement to me, is it indeed?
2. Do you think the Ultima Vanquish will give BF2/BFBC2 games a good boost? I am getting 60 frames with my current setup, on medium settings. I like to record game play using fraps, which is a no go with my current computer.
3. Since Ultima Vanquish will be crossfire, Where do I hookup my 3 screens? 2 on 1st card and 3rd on 2nd card wouldn't hinder the crossfire? (never had crossfire before!), any advice regrading the crossfire for a noobie would be great.
4. My current computer is pretty loud due to the gfx card, how loud do you think Ultima Vanquish could be? (silly question, but thought i'd ask anyways)

Thank you for your time :).

Is that the original Phenom? I think it is. If so, they are horrible overclockers, and their in game performance is dire, compared to others - in some games the Athlon X2 are faster, as are the E8400.

The build from OCUK looks to be a good choice. Although I think that you should transfer your SSD over to the new PC.

So to answer your questions.

Yes you will have a nice jump in performance - you'll defiantly be able to run BC2 on full - BF2 is frame limited to 100 - I didn't have a jump in performance from my 4650 and I7 to i7 and 5850.

3) Would you be wanting to use eyefinity? That's assuming one of your monitors has a display port connection. To my understanding, if your monitors support display port and DVI you can easily connect all three monitors up to one card. With the second one acting in crossfire.

Or failing that I believe you can have another screen plugged into the 2nd card - so you'll be able to have all three plugged in to your PC.

Not sure on noise on the new computer, if your concerned about it, send the OCUK team a web note, or if your ordering by Phone, then you could always ask them while your ordering.

I have no idea, maybe this will help:

That's what I was thinking too, the 1TB drive it comes with would make a good backup drive.

I will try it out for a bit but it's not a factor for me, I have 2 X 19" and 1 X 24" screens so things won't line up in eyefinity, still...I will have a look =P.

As long as I can have 3 screens working for work, I am happy. I play BF games on the 24" screen at 1920 X 1080.

Since you've got different sized screens, probably not using eyefinity would work best for you and have it in a standard extended desktop way.

If you get the ultima vanquish inquire about getting 2x 470's instead of 5870's, they perform a bit better in SLI and should save you a bit of £

Are you planning on buying the Ultima Vanquish outright or just buying a similar spec and rebuilding your own? I seriously recommend the latter if you're going to do anything.

Your hdd (especially that ssd!), optical drive, case, cpu cooler, os (if w7 retail?) and gpu will all be reusable and you'd be able to save yourself a fair bit in the process. That 4870X2 is well and truly bottlenecked by your cpu so i'd recommend going for an oc'd i7 or X4/X6 and seeing for yourself how it performs. If you're still unhappy with it you could go for xfire 5870s, but personally i'd wait til the 6xxx series. My 4870X2 runs everything great including bfbc2 so I'd do that before you part with a big wodge of cash ;)

we can always build you a vanquish with no gpu

that way you can get a sweet system and add your X2 and ssd

that way you will actually see the benfit drom the good hardware you have

I did consider getting some new hardware, but ..
1. My experience with putting a computer together is rather crap to say the least. There's always something I mess up (ie. The H50 took better part of 2 days to put in! and the thing wasn't even sitting on the CPU in the end!).
2. I am not sure if I can OC it correctly myself if I just get the hardware

What do you think about one of the overclocked bundles? Krypton AMD Phenom II Bundle for £574.05? this would give me a compatible good OC CPU, MB, Ram..and I'll just stick in the H50 and the SSD. Later on, I can go for a 6xxxx card.

I have 650watt PSU from cwt, it should be alright for this Bundle and this bundle should fit in my X-Blade case...I hope.

Looks good. I did a similar upgrade with a 1055T, and a 890GX. Probably saved around £150, but if you like the bundle and the better performance, it should do good. 1090T + H50 + 890FX = 4GHz win.

The thing is, you already have a H50, so you'll be wasting £30 on a cooler you don't need (unless you want a backup).

Why not just buy a 1055t, along with an 890 motherboard, and some new ram(if you need it).

That would come to what 250-370 depending if you need to buy new ram?

I'll be getting Titan TTC cooler with the bundle which is cheaper, and then sell it off for about £30 :).

I could, but with the bundle I'll be spending about £23 extra, which is pretty good for a package that is overclocked + full 12 Month collect and return warranty.

Opt for a new PSU & case is my opinion. Working with the X-Blade cases isn't very nice, and with all that new hardware why not splash a bit more cash on a lovely new case to boot? ;)

Also the PSU, CWT's aren't great, I'd avoid using this and opt for a known and reliable modular unit such as Corsair, OCZ, Sapphire or Seasonic.

A few examples;

Not that I am a fan of CWT, but the PSU has been pretty good so far. I might replace it later on though.

So, I believe I am ready for the order, just need these specs checked please :).

Case: Coolermaster HAF 922 Case - Black
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition 3.20GHz @ 4.00GHz
Motherboard: Asus Crosshair IV Formula AMD 890FX (Socket AM3) DDR3
RAM: Corsair XMS3 (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel
Cooler: Corsair H50
Hard drive: Intel X25-M 80gig
CWT 650watt PSU
4870x2

£676.37 + shipping (I already have PSU, gfx, HD and the cooler)

Questions
1. I will replace the 4870x2 with a 6xxx later, perhaps even crossfire 6xxx - They should be as same size as 5xxx, will the case fit 2 5970 size cards? it's a safe assumption I think.

2. Will the Motherboard be ok for a 6xxx card alone or in crossfire?

Thank you guys.
