My computer won't turn off

I clicked the shut down button about 20 minutes ago, all it did this time is close all programmes but wouldn't turn off. I tried CTRL+ALT+Delete also, it came up but when I clicked log out it didn't log me out.

I'm tempted to hold the power button but don't really wanna risk it, but its pretty late and I want to go to sleep

lol hold the power button down.

as long as you don't do this regularly it is absolutely fine.

I've held the power button every day at work for about 15 years. Never made any difference.

its not the best way but it works. failing that just pull the cable out.

may i ask why?

the os cleans itself up abit on shutdown so is a good idea to shutdown occasionally the proper way.

personally i hibernate 19 times out of 20. The shutdown on the twentieth slightly decreases the possibly of OS stutters (where it hangs for a few seconds)

If you do pull out the cable just start it up again then shut it down properly it will do the same thing.

Go to task manager, is there a program that is unresponsive? it will say ( not responding) sort that out. heck if its some big windows update its installing also.

Because a) they have to be switched off and b) it's the quickest way of doing it and then heading for the exit to beat the rush.

Has this been resolved. To edit my last quote never pull out by back of tower just turn of power supply by wall last case.
