I bought the Artic cooling Accelero twin turbo made a good job of it on one of my 4870 put back into comp went to fit the crossfire links and the AC Accelero heat pipes stick up so much that the crossfire links rest very tight on them but got so far into project that i went on and booted up comp.

Temps for that card went through the roof it was quite sound wise done some furmark just got too hot, so pulled card back out of computer and those heat pipes were so hot i could not touch and forgot about the crossfire links just cought that in time.

I pulled card apart again then read what sharpygsxr did and fitted the metal red base plate on first then the AC Accelero on checked paste on GPU just to make sure all seemed OK put card back in re test and still to hot though VDDC temps were better so a wast of time....:(

So i put back stock cooler with new past much louder in noise but feel bit more confident in card, though if i run furmark max temps seem to hit 102 /c
Is that too hot anyone??? also in all this motherboard temps were very hot too NB temps around 70-85 /c CPU around 50 /c and system temps around 50-60/c

In the end bought two Akasa 12cm UltraQuite fans one suck and one blow and all temps have dropped BIG TIME CPU 31 /c NB 59 /c motherboard 40 /c
But maybe i still need to sort out the 4870 temps.

Sorry for long wright up but just in case this helps someone then great.

102deg is at the hot end, not good for long life of the GPU. Same with the NB temps really, and as you discovered having better case ventilation really helps. You need a vented cooler for something like a hot GFX card, too much hot air being sprayed about without. Put my hand round the back of my case where the GTX280 exhausts and it's hot air being blasted out - imagine that being put into the case instead and relying on the case fans to shift it, they got enough work with CPU and NB...

That was furmark when it hit 102deg But in call of duty 5 was on for a hour quit back to desktop open up Cat temps on GPU read 65deg wow thats good, well that was GPU fan set to 50%.

So are you saying i should stick with the stock cooler ChrisLX200 ?

Just an update, I have now got two new 120 fans in my PC which has brought my system temps down by a large margin Graphics cards were still hot but better overall.

Then I put on another two small fans in that came from my AC Pc case which i was not using, I put these on top of my two graphic cards so air was blowing down between the two cards and onto the motherboard,s northbridge cooler.

If i run Furmark then temps get upto around 90-95 deg which i think is hot but better than 102 deg in games like Call of Duty 5 after one hour quit out then check temps it,s showing around 62 deg.
So as air cooling goes that`s enough for me, would be nice to overclock the cards but when i have 3Dmark06 shows no increase ?
