Clearly a lie right, check it out for yourself:

It has the LS1 5.7 V8 engine with a few sensible modifications

Standard it delivers 345bhp @ 5600 and 350lb/ft @ 4400. Performance standard is 0-60 in 4.5 and a top speed of 175mph and certainly isn’t for the faint hearted. MPG is very good, Average is about 20-25 MPG and on the Motorway it will do 35-40 MPG.

Has to be half that imo

Beany used to/still does* own a Corvette. He'll know better than any of us.

The motorway mpg figure might be right. IIRC Corvettes (and some other US cars) have a stupidly high top gear - something like 40+mph/1000

It may well do ~30 miles to a US gallon. Fuel injected high-comp V8 turning at very few rpms in a high gear. More than likely a bit optimistic saying 35-40 miles per imperial gallon though, if thats what the advert reckons.

30mpg (imperial) on a cruise would be about right really, dropping below 20 in town.

A US Gallon is less than an imperial gallon so surely you'd get less miles compared?

Yeah. Chalk that one up to me not making it to bed last night :)

I can't see that 'vette making 35-40 mpg even cruising, but 30 ought to be do-able on a nice long run at low rpms.

"It may well do ~30 miles to a US gallon."

A UK gallon is 20% larger than a US gallon, so ar you saying it will do ~36 miles to a UK gallon?

Rubbish.

Even my Audi A8 with it's ultra-modern 40v 4.2 V8 and uber-light aluminium chassis will only do 29mpg at 70mph on the motorway.

best i have managed is about 27mpg.

so again, cant see a 'vette managing 35-40 at any speed.

This 'Vette owner's claims may be a little optimistic, but they're not completely outlandish.

I have a similar engine in my car, a 1995 Trans Am, and I have calculated that I'm getting around 29mpg on a long motorway trip. I average 20-22mpg just pottering to/from work each day.

It's all thanks to the gearing being incredibly tall, especially 6th. Motorway cruising, the car is barely above idle speeds (around 1000-1500rpm at 60-70mph).

Of course, if I'm really heavy with the loud pedal, single-digit mpg is achievable! :D

Hi there

Well I know the Vette is far better on fuel than the Mustang. Thats typical of Fords always been gusslers though. :D

My Mustang will return an average of 15-16MPG driven around town and short blast on dual carriage ways.

On the motorway if I use 5th gear it will happily return approx 20MPG if I stick to around 90mph which is approx 2700rpm. If I was more sensible and stuck to approx 60-70mph which is more like 2000rpm then I suspect that would increase upto approx 22MPG.

The Corvette is better, yeah it may not make sense with the Vette having a larger 5.7l engine but they do return better MPG and I'd have said on the motorway the Vette could easily return 30MPG.

You have to remember the American cars do tend to have silly long top gears to help MPG when cruising in top. The Mustang is geared for a maximum speed of 240mph in 5th gear whereas its realistic top end is only approx 170mph. I'd imagine the Corvette will have a similar long cogged top gear too. Plus the fact GM don't drink as much fuel as Fords do in general either. :D

This why in the US one of the favourite mods if is to change gear differentials out. My Mustang has 3:55:1 gears, changing these out for 4:10:1 gears has an incredible impact on acceleration and reduces top-end gearing down quite a bit and you also lose fuel economy too, but enjoy far greater acceleration and the ability to rip the tarmec up even more. :D

A perfect example is my 3000GT, its a 3.0l V6 with twin turbos and it does average 18-22MPG in town with 30+ MPG on the motorway when driven off boost. Compare that too Fords ST220 which also has a 3.0l V6 but no turbo's yet only returns similar MPG figures. Ford are just typical fuel gusslers. :)

Indeed. The old Viper with the 8.0 engine was geared so that if you could ever redline it in 6th you'd be doing the best part of 300mph....hence why you could have a 10 cylinder 8 litre car that wasn't exactly light but could do 20mpg on a cruise :)

From Beany who has one:

Having owned it for over 2 years mpg round town is 14mpg and on a motorway run 24mpg.

There's a user on here called Beany who isn't banned according to his profile. That the same guy?

I just talked to a friend who has an '02 Corvette. He reckons he gets about 27mpg on a long, 65-70mph cruise keeping the revs way down.
