My CPU fan seems too small for the holes in the motherboard?

Hi all,

trying to assemble my new system - i5-2500k with stock CPU cooler and Asus P8-Z77-V LX. I'm trying to attach the fan to the motherboard, yet the fan seems slightly too small for the holes.

I can't find any reference to different cooler sizes, so am I doing something wrong, or what can I do? I attach a photo of the cooler and the motherboard holes to show that I'm not going crazy, the pins are definitely not far enough apart!

No matter how I turn it around, it seems only 2 pins are far enough apart, the other two aren't. Anybody know what to do with this? Are the i5 stock coolers (or some of them) a different size?

This is really weird, the processor seems to be 1155 (it definitely is, it fits in the socket! plus the pin config underneath looks right), however the fan is model e97375-001 which is definitely a lga775 fan! No wonder it doesn't fit.

I think there was a transitional period where 775 coolers could be used on 1155 motherboard - for instance the ASRock H77 has two sets of holes to fit coolers of either size here: http://nuevas-tecnologias.com.ar/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Q77M-vPro-2.jpg

Does this sound an accurate diagnosis?

I bought this off the MM so will have to ask him about it!

Does indeed look like it's a 775 cooler, iirc it goes like this, s775, s1155/6 then s1136. My current and previous aftermarket coolers have/had holes on the mount points for all 3 sockets.

Any tips on a good 1155 cooler I could get delivered by Friday, gratefully received! ;)

Update: turns out the MM guy sent me the wrong cooler after all and is going to send the proper one through! Ha! That should tide me over until I decide to watercool the lot or something :D
