My CPU is reading 90° - Is this why my PC is crashing?

Hi there, please can you help, I've had a nightmare these past 24 hours...I used a program called speccy and it told me my graphics card was 82° and my CPU was 70°....the reason I installed this program was because my PC started randomly crashing yesterday out of the blue whilst playing a brand new game which most of you will have heard of called Starcraft 2.....anyways my graphics card fried last night after about 5 crashes as the PC would only turn back on for 1 second and then it would shut down.

So today I've gone and bought a new graphics card and now I am back online as I am writing this post to you know from my PC.

BUT! my PC is still crashing and that program speccy is now saying my CPU is at 90° and was flicking up to 93°...AND also when I was starting the PC a second ago in the bios it said some message, cant remember exactly what...something along the lines of WARNING: PROCESSOR THERMAL SOMETHING...

And its crashes about 3 times in past 20 mins since I got to desktop for first time with new graphics card.

I've had this PC a year and a half, I built it myself and its been fine untill now.

my spec is:
Intel quad core Q8200 2.3ghz
4gig of ram
Intel DG45 mobo
new graphics card is XFX ATI radeon HD 5770 1gig
800gig sata
audigy 7.1 sound card

What temperatures should my CPU be at? and what do you suggest I do, buy a new fan and thermal paste? and if so can you recommend both off overclockers website. Is there anyway I can turn up my fan speed on my CPU.

Also does it matter if theres thermal paste between the heatsink of the fan and the CPU or can you use a heatsink/fan without paste?

EDIT: whilst at desktop my CPU is reading 80° right now. PC has been on like 20 mins or more and seems stable right this second.
Thanks in advance.

First of all use Coretemp and Gpu-Z to find the temperatures of cpu and gfx respectively. I have never heard of speccy.
The temperatures are too high and that 'Throttle' means that CPU's inbuilt safety mechanism has been started and is causing the system to crash/shutdown to protect the cpu from overheating/frying.

You said that the problem is recent and the system has been working fine for over 1 and half years. What were your temps before the problem started?

Thermal paste is essential as it increases thermal conductivity between cpu surface and heatsink and allows the heat to escape quickly and efficiently. I would suggest arctic silver 5 as it's a very good thermal paste. Maybe someone can give better recommendation.

What is your Vcore value in the bios?

I would suggest taking out the cpu, reseating it and applying new thermal paste and a good heatsink (maybe someone can give a recommended one). Then check your temps again as your current one is still very high for normal usage.

Edit: I am running my [email protected] (overclocked) and the core temp is idle at 34-37C and 58-60C at full load.

In bios it says:

motherboard temperature = 42°
ICH temp = 82° (not sure what this is?)
MCH = 45° (not sure what this is?)
CPU Cooling fan = 2783 RPM

Also used a program called GPU-Z on my new graphics card and it says graphics is at 49.5°

used another program called core temp and it says my CPU is at 84°.

I tried to use rivatuner for my new 5770 coz I wanted to up the fan speed on new graphics card but couldnt find the option to do it, I think rivatuner doesnt support my graphics card.

The thing is if my CPU cooling fan is at 2783 RPM, isnt that good? So therfore why would my CPU be overheating?

Anyways, the PC seems stable for now, so I think I just wont do any gaming untill I got new fan and paste for CPU and am gona buy another fan for case aswell.

Thanks in advance.

MCH would be your northbridge temperature which looks fine.

What cpu cooler are you using, does the system require dusting :p

Thanks in advance.

MCH is the northbridge chipset on your mobo
ICH is the southbridge chipset on your mobo

Your GFX temps seem ok but I suggest using 'MSI Afterburner' to manually change your gfx fan and you can also use this program to overclock your graphics card.

Maybe your current cpu heatsink isn't very efficient or maybe became slightly dislocated from it's proper position.

Whats your case and how many case fans do you currently have ?

I cleaned all the dust out of it, so dust is defo not a problem.

Can one of you recommend a good fan for my CPU from overclockers shop?

socket 775 for Q8200 2.3ghz, not overclocked as my mobo doesnt support it.

Thanks in advance.

Starcraft 2 could be the problem here... the menus render with no framerate capping - causing the CPU and GPU to run as fast as possible = get very hot and killing peoples hardware... devs = idiots.

Yeah CPU fan is spinning, all the fans are spinning. PC seems stable now, its been on for prob over 5 hours. I only been using websites, watching big brother and talking on msn, playing winamp for music.

Not tried any games coz I know the CPU will overheat and crash the PC.

I'm going to a shop tomorrow to buy a new Fan and paste so reckon it would be sorted then. I'll post back tomorrow and show new temperature.

It could be that the voltage is configured wrongly in the BIOS causing the CPU to run hotter than it should.

I will guess you are using the standard heatsink.
Most likely scenario is that one or more of the pins holding your heatsink onto the MB has come undone or snapped.

Before you go spending money check that the 4 clips are locked into position properly.

Someone above said ICH is the southbridge chipset on your mobo, well mine is reading at 82° according to bios, is that not high?

Are the north and southbridge chipsets the bits of the motherboard where I can see two extra heatsinks?
