My CPU seems to be running hot

Got a C2D e4300 on stock cooling in a ABIt Pro AB9 Mobo. I have set the BIOS CPU settings to auto, and it detected it as a 1.80GHz so all good.

at normal to low usage is hovers about 40 Degrees. I have been playing with Encase recently and tried to import a load of Hashs, this put the CPU at half load and the temperatures started rising significantly I let it get to 76 Degrees before killing the app and the temp immediately dropped. I tried running the hash import a few more times with similar results.

I downloaded Coretemp, Tat(which didn't work) and a few other programs to see if it was just uguru being a bit wet. But all the temp monitor apps seemed to indicate the same sort of problems.

Seeing as I see a lot of people on here have managed to significantly Overclock this CPU on Stock cooling and quoting similar temps to mine I'm a bit concerned.

I have removed the heatsink and removed the thermo-paste on the CPU/heatsink and applied some AS5 and am about to mount a 120mm fan in the front of my case. (Have a Antec Sonata III) So hope fully when I get home tonight and turn it all on it will be running cooler. However, if it is not what do you guys suggest. My planned next step is to get an Artic freezer 7 pro.

e4300s seem to have thermal paste or epoxy between the die and the IHS. This makes them prone to higher temps than the conroe C2Ds.

Perhaps this is the issue with your CPU. Also check to see if CPU or sink is concave or convex with a strait impliment.

Fire extinguisher on standby? ;)

I would definately buy the Artic freezer 7 since they are great considering they are so cheap and it will make a bit of difference with AS5 applied. Also have you given the AS5 time to set into place? I noticed when I first did my first PC build, after a few days it seemed to drop about 5-7 degrees after it had been through a few thermal cycles.

This PC also in your study? I remember you saying how hot it gets in there with all the PC's running, it could be recycling the warm air in the room.

The study wasn't too bad for temperature yesterday. Its fine as long as I leave the top window open and the door open. If I close the door. It gets very hot in there. (so when there is more than 1 PC/console running the door is usually open- except when I am gaming at night, when it gets closed to reduce the noise I make)

There is about a 1 foot gap between the PC and the wall, and that gap is also open on the left side too. so the air is circulating (I put my hand behind the PC to see if the air was warm round there and it was no worse than the rest of the room.

Only applied the AS5 this morning but I'm aware there is a temp drop after 200 hours running time. Heres hoping it works.

Was just a thought, because that thing is running hotter then my OC'd Athlon 64 and I was under the impression that both the E6000+E4000 C2Duo's run cooler then A64's looks like I was wrong after reading about the E4300's. Next step Arctic freezer 7?

See how it goes tonight as to whether an emergency purchase is made (was hoping to get the HSF when I get a new switch and another HDD to save on the P&P.)

Arctic silver 5 to the rescue, CPU now at 37.0 and fan at 900 rpm. Wahay down from yesterday

Ran the hash import and it did crank up the temp a bit to about 50 - 60 (depending on the tool used) but the fan never went above 1300 rpm. (it was constantly at 1800 - 1920 when running the import yesterday)
