Well his personal wodge of ntfs. Fortunatly has has a second pc and a backup. Unfortunatly he didn't back up everything so I need to get in there and try and find some things.

At the moment i'm not sure why it died (hardware or software) but the filesystem is corrupted. Whats the best way to try and get stuff back. I've tried "getdataback" but that hung at 8% after a unknown errror 23, which as far as i can tell just means its corrupted...which i knew. I'm trying pc inspector file recovery now, which is throwing up lots of error 23s as we speak but not hanging.

I'm not bothered about repairing the entire filesystem. Just getting a few files off.

Any tips?

I've already done that. No idea what noises its making I'm sat 300 miles away from it at the moment (remote desktop connection). He didn't mention any odd noises so its probably not grinding holes in itself......i hope.

He said it crashed...then crashed again reloading windows...then failed to load (just a flashing cursor). Now we've got it in the other pc windows says it can't read the partition (but it does display a drive letter). My guess is that windows was doing something important then crashed and took the filesystem with it.
