Hey people my Dad has had to buy a new motherboard for his pc. He's installed it fine and the computers working but his Vista license key doesn't work any more and the computer can't be used. The computer uses a 160gb IDE hhd and has been wiped (apart from the reinstall of Vista).
My Dad wants to buy a copy of 7 and pay for it to be installed and have Vista erased or would it be easier and cheaper to buy this bundle from Overclockers and let my Dad install it himself?

Cheers guys

With the bundle, it's an OEM copy of Windows 7 so once it is installed, it will be locked to that motherboard so can only be installed on that computer therefore it depends on if he plans to upgrade later. I personally wouldn't pay someone to install windows, if he bought a retail copy himself then he just installed would be an easier option. During Windows install there is an option to format the disk so deleting the old OS is simple enough and if he managed to install Vista then he should be fine with Windows 7.

So either go retail and him install it or if he won't be changing motherboards/upgrading then go for the bundle.

I would as IDE drives have probably served their shelf life and the SATA HDD would offer more space, be faster & usually quieter, and offer more reliability as it ages if he's not going to be upgrading.

Or he could save a little, and buy Windows 7 retail and install it himself on the IDE HDD but I'd get the bundle if it was me.

If you call Microsoft they will reactivate the OEM for use with another MB if you are in the UK. I had them do many copies of XP a few years back (230 in total i think).
Microsoft can get away with this OEM tied to the MB in the USA but UK law is different. From what i read a few years ago (and it worked) that if you challenge Microsoft on this OEM rules they will reactivate your copy, i had to speak to MS corporate support to get any sense though.
I think i was something to do with OEM is for one PC and Motherboard but in the UK this is transferable under UK law (consumer laws) as long as it is still for one PC (the same pc or a totally different one). From what i read Microsoft have never attempted to challenger this in the UK courts (i would think this is either because: it is not worth it to them, or they will loose under UK law). After all a licence to use a product should be a licence for a person to use a product and not for a bunch of no conscious components to use it.

I'm sure people here will object to me saying this, but either way it worked for me and there were several websites i read that do suggests UK law will not allow the same OEM rules as in the USA.
