For some reason my Dad tried to upgrade his motherboard, since then nothing has worked. I took it away to have a look at it and straight away noticed the power supply was making a nasty whining, the PC didnt POST at all and no memory error beeps when i removed the memory. I think he shorted something somehow and later found a screw floating about inside the case after i removed the motherboard.

We replaced the PSU first and were left with the same problems, no POST or memory errors. Then i convinced him to upgrade so he got a new motherboard and AMD x2 CPU, i gave him some old sticks of DDR2 i had lying about too. When installed again there was no POST but removing the memory did result in some beeping. So we've moved forwards but still nothing on the monitor, we tried swapping out the graphics card too as a test and exactly the same. The only not new bit that could be at fault is the monitor not working, i shall be testing with one of my old monitors this weekend but think it's pretty unlikely.

Anyone got any ideas what else it could be?

I forget what you call them, but he did use those screws that lift the mobo to create some space stopping the mobo from touching the case?

If not, the mobo won't work as it will be shorting - and Mama's baby doesn't like shorting.

The spacers, yeah i built it for him originally and all was good. The new motherboard he tried to use used the same holes. I'm thinking he may have trapped a screw underneath maybe but that doesnt explain why it isnt working now.

Could he have started pulling cables out of sockets while power was still running through the PSU?
