eBay Safeharbor Department Notice

Fraud Alert ID : 00626654

Dear eBay member,

You have received this email because you or someone else had used your identity to make false purchases on eBay. For security reasons, we are required to open an investigation on this matter. We treat online fraud seriously and all cases which cannot be resolved between eBay and the other involved party are forwarded for further investigations to the proper authorities. To speed up this process, you are required to verify your personal information against the eBay account registration data we have on file by following the link below.

Has anyone else got this email before?

It's asking me to submit my own personal details... but the thing is.. i dont even have an ebay account

The link it gave no longer works...

Is this a bit dodgy to anyone else? Or is it genuin?

It's a scam to make you give over your details. Delete it. Even if it looks like it's from ebay, delete it.

Smells fishy, if you want to make sure, email the ebay fraud emails people and they will tell you if it is genuine.

I think it isnt though.

Reading inbetween the lines it reads thus...

Dear Ebay member....

My name is akenibay zinngbipbop and I am from Nigeria. I am a thief and a fraudster and would be very happy if you would kindly make my like easier by just giving me all your login details etc for your ebay account... while your at it why not your bank too.

Regards

your friend.

TBH it won't be real if it says "to ebay member". They always seem to say To [your real name/username]. One day the spammers will realise this...

I had a similar email once. Ebay did use my name though (or rather, login). I logged into my ebay account and the email was correct. There had been an investigation and I had to answer a load of security questions to log in and was forced to change my password etc.

Dear easytoguessaccountfromemailaddress;) ([email protected]),

In order to protect the security of your eBay account, we have reset your password and secret question. This action was taken because your password may have been compromised.

We cannot disclose the investigative procedures that led to this conclusionbut please know that we acted in your best interest. We appreciate your cooperation in working with us to protect your account by taking the following steps.

Since your password was reset, you will need to create a new password by following the instructions provided below. Until you complete this process, you will not be able to bid on or list an item.

1. Click on the "site map" link at the top of most eBay pages.
2. Click on the 'I forgot my password' link located in the middle column under the 'Services' heading.
3. Once you have reached the 'Forgot Your Password?' page enter your User ID in the provided box and click on the 'Continue' button.
4. On the next page you will be asked to answer the Secret Question that you created at the time of registration OR provide one of three pieces of contact information from your eBay account. Since we have reset your Secret Question along with your password you will not have the correct answer to your secret question. Please proceed by supplying one of the three pieces of contact information requested then clicking the 'Continue' button.
5. An email with the subject line 'Forgotten Password' will then be sent to the email addressed you have tied to your eBay account. Please log into your email account and click on the link supplied to you in the email that we have sent.
6. Once you arrive at that link you will be prompted to enter your User ID one more time, then enter and reenter your new password.

IMPORTANT: In addition to changing the password on your eBay account, please change the password on your personal email account. If your old eBay password was also the password for any other online account you use (PayPal, etc.), we recommend that you immediately change those passwords as well. To maintain password security, each one of your online accounts should have a different password. Even a slight difference (one letter or number) offers substantial protection.

SELLERS: After creating your new password on eBay you will need to update the eBay password that is stored within any auction/listing software that you may use to list your items, relist your items, or add information to your listings. Taking this step will ensure that your current and future listings run without interruption.

Taking these steps will ensure you are the only one that has access to your account. Also, please remember the following guidelines when it comes to password security:

1. Be wary of emails appearing to be from eBay that include links to pages that require you to sign in, as these are often attempts to collect your password information. Make sure that the Web site you are directed to is a part of the eBay site. Please note this email does not provide a link, but asks that you go directly to eBay. Always make sure that you're on an eBay page before giving out your eBay password or credit card information. The best way to ensure that you are on the eBay site is to type www.ebay.com into the Web address window of your browser.

2. Make sure your password is difficult to guess, and uses a combination of letters and numbers.

3. Don't use the same password on eBay that you use on your email account, or on other Web sites.

4. Review additional information on account security and choosing a secure password. To review this information, please visit the eBay Help system by clicking on the “help†link located at the top of every eBay page and then choosing the following topics:

Topics > Safe Trading > If Something Goes Wrong... > Account Theft

If you require assistance with issues that are not addressed in this message, please refer to the eBay Help Center by clicking on the "help" link located at the top of most eBay pages.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience in this matter.

Regards,

Customer Support (Trust and Safety Department)
eBay International AG

edit - I see you don't have an account - disregard everything that I have said, however, it may be useful for eBay members.

Phisher's tend to be from former soviet states - It's the 419ers and cheque scams that are traditionally associated with Nigeria.

SCAM - Ebay dont send emails like that i think iirc.
No they don't

1) They use your name

2) They tell you to log in and change your password. No links given.

I've had my account hacked, so I've experienced this first hand :)

Lostkat is right. I didn't post my email from ebay when my account got hacked for nothing ;) Not one single link and my user name and email address used.
