Phone Virgin Media as I want to increase my broadband from 10MB to 20MB (I considered 50MB but it is still a little too pricy even with my discounting skillZ!).

I have a load of discounts on my account from when I blagged Talk Unlimited, XL TV, V+ and a extra V Box including an amusing -£10 for having the second box rather than being charged for it.

So the guy says he can do me the upgrade to 20mb for an extra £10 and then tries to enter it into the computer and it just goes BOING! He looks at my discounts and says: "I have never seen an account with so many discounts on" and then has to force the computer to accept it.

The amusing part was I was willing to drop down from XL TV or XL Phone to keep the costs down but because of my complex discounts that would have made it more expensive as he would have to have removed some of them.

So I have gone from £30 to £40 for all that!

Me 1 Virgin Media 0

I also got £200 of my home and car insurance bill (£100 off each) by phoning Direct Line and blagging.

If you just pay what they ask they must have seen you coming!

I've been wanting to upgrade our internet as it's a pitiful 2mb :(

Should I phone them and say something like Sky offered me a better deal and see what they can do/tell them I want to cancel in order to get faster internet for little/no money?

I don't say anything about leaving just "What is the best price you can do me for X"

I also do this with just about everyone. Did it with T Mobile for about 10 years right up until the other day when they told me my discounts would no longer apply and they'll be wanting an extra £30 a month off me.

I'm now happily settled with O2 after I convinced them to give me an iphone discount even though I don't know how to use it properly.

It is nice to get one over on VM, they have been trying so hard to keep people on they offer stupid amounts of discount!

Nice result for you :D

The VM discounts system regularly breaks for me, but not in a good way. It's usually a case of "well I can't see why you're getting charged that much. Awfully sorry, we'll knock it off next months bill". It's happened four or five times to me in the last 18 months.

If there was any other ISP to choose from I'd be gone. Hold on to your discounts LordSplodge, and cherish them while thinking of the more unlucky customers! :p

ok then... glad you know what xl phone and xl tv is, i would still say they are winning as your buying stuff you don't need 50mb internet line? i take it you run a small business ? :p

Thinking I may chase them up and see if I can get my mums internet upgraded from 2mb to 10mb for nothing :p

Afterall they were begging me to stay when I cancelled out Uni 20mb broadband.

It's 20MB not 50MB. 50MB would have cost me £60 for all three a month.

And the TV and phone packages are a bonus. Sure I don't need them but I'd be worse off dropping to a lower package!

I just gave it a shot, you must be a more convincing talker than me, all I could get was XL TV, XL Broadband and Medium Phone for that. :(

I listed what services you were getting for the price and he refused to believe me! :D

they will do yeah, just try and speak to an English person as the ones in the Indian call centre seem to be the most unhelpful bunch ever.

Good effort! Same experience when I bought my M1730 from Dell a little over a year ago. Phone them just before the end of the financial year. Then phone again and get a quote from another rep. Play them off against each other for the commission. Leave them hanging until two or three days before the end of the FY. Managed to get myself over £600 off the beasty, was fairly pleased.

Sometimes you can just ask for a discount. I recently asked Be there for 3 months free and to 'see what they can do about me paying less per month' they offered me £15 a month for Be Pro, I get 24.5 down and 2.8 up :D.

I've also just scrounged 2800 minutes 3 to 3 on my contract, so all in all I get about 3550 minutes per month, 150 texts and 'unlimited internet' from 3 for £33 a month.

They've been a pain in all though, especially when they go on about discounts that you have no knowlege of.

Yes the guy I spoke to was shocked at my level of discounts and also the computer had a fit accepting them when he did the upgrade.

XL TV, XL BB and M Phone isn't a bad deal. I was told that to drop to M Phone from my package would have only saved me 50p
