My E6300 & DS3 Poor Overclocker...

Dont know if it helps but...I am running a Gigabyte DQ6 and it wont run with my Corsair XMS2-6400, although the ram works fine in an AM2 system. It just does not want to start. Have not yet tried reflashing the BIOS to see if that works.

However

My Geil memory works perfect, and I am able to overclock great. Could the boards be picky about memory? Strange why my corsair wont work???

And also...

If i put my Geil and Corsair in it works ok too...???

edit - its XMS2-6400 C5

Well, It's been a couple of days, and clearing the CMOS, reflashing the bios and removing the mobo battery for several hours with the power disconnected, I'm now facing decision time!

Some people over on the extremesystems forum are having exactly the same problems as me, ie their DS3 won't overclock an inch via Bios but OC's 10% through the easy tune.

My system is fully stable both at stock and at the modest overclock, but something tells me it shouldn't be doing what it's doing!

So...

1. Do I just live with it, and wait for a bios release that will hopefully fix it?
2. Try a different brand of RAM?
3. RMA it (Less than 7 days old), and get a replacement DS3
4. RMA it, and try a different manufacturer?

Hi there, no, I'm not using a Raid setup.

What I have done though is create a driver disk as per the manual to enable SATAII support. I'm using this disk during windows setup.

I just stuck the new board and chip in without reinstalling windows initially, and although everything installed ok, it was unstable and the HD was very noisy and slow.

What are you thinking?

ide toss a coin between those 2, probably leaning towards a different brand altogether.

Over on the extreme systems forum a guy who got this board did some major testing. In the end he came to the conclusion that as long as you dont use RAID u r ok. But when RAID is used something is seriously wrong. I will try and dig up the thread for you when I get the chance. Though as you are not using RAID I dont think this is the same problem.

BTW are you saying that you did not reinstall windows when you changed motherboards?

Not initially, but when I saw how it was running, I did a reformat and cleared the CMOS etc on the Mobo.

It runs absolutely fine at stock, and I'm getting benchies approx 30% faster than my old 940 oc'd to 3.7Ghz. I can even run it at 2.2Ghz through software OC utilities, but this only gives me a taster of what the chip can do! :)

I even tried a fresh install using a spare single IDE drive to see if it was related to SATA ports etc, but still the same.

Ok, about to give up!!

I've tried running the memory in single channel mode, and even tried a 512MB stick of different brand memory in case it was the corsair it didn't like.

I've also now updated the Bios to Version F4a, and still no joy...

Can still OC using the Easy Tune software though to a FSB of 320 fully stable giving me a CPU clock of just over 2.2Ghz, which is ok I suppose but pathetic compared to what some have got on this forum!

I've noticed my Freezer 7 Pro is working much less hard cooling this E6300 than my 940, and most of the time it's ticking over at 900rpm, so that's a good side benefit. It's the quietest my PC has been! (Apart from switched off, obviously!!)

Ah well, been fun(?!) trying, and it's still a quick chip even at stock, and very good in my games. I've been seeing a 30FPS+ increase in the Half Life Lost Coast test for instance, so happy enough for now.

However, if those X6800's would just come back into stock... ;)

I can sort this for you (I think)

Ok ,set your RAM volts to +0.3. Now set your FSB to 400 and leave all else at stock. Make sure your RAM is on the lowest of dividers. Providing this works, take the FSB up 10Mhz at a time and then keep going until it is unstable.

This should sort you out. The RAM will be quite happy like this so dont worry.

Cheers,

Can anyone explain to me why this happens:

I overclock the FSB just by 5mhz then save and exit. My computer starts spinning its fans fast then i have to hard reset. I turn the pc on again, then when in windows the thing has underclocked my cpu. When i go back into the bios it still shows 205mhz as the fsb?!

Mm, not too sure I should follow the advice of Core2Duo!!

I've RMA'd the Gigabyte now, and ordered an Asus instead, always got on ok with them, so fingers crossed.

gam3r, my setup is doing exactly the same sometimes when I try to overclock. I presume you've updated to the latest bios?

I could only clear mine with a CMOS reset, which brings me on to another bad thing about this board, the position of the CMOS reset jumper - right behind the graphics card!! I had to remove the card each time to reset, so I just attached a power switch cable from an old case and used that to reset it without having to take the thing apart.

I've also noticed that whenever I use my DVD, the computer slows to a crawl and the mouse pointer is very jerky. If I'm playing music in the background via mediaplayer, then this just stutters madly whilst the DVD is being accessed.

It's just not a very stable board for me, although I accept that others are getting good results.

Hi Tooks, just a question for you..

When you had the DS3 and you used to power your pc on, did it use to turn your fans on, turn off and THEN power up normally?

Edit: just managed to hit 2.1Ghz on stock everything :)

1st time after I installed the board it did, and after each subsequent CMOS reset/battery removal for 5 minutes, it does the same.

I can hit 2.1Ghz using the easy tune app, but just can't do anything through the bios at all - it's wierd!!

My easytune app is screwed! I tried to uninstall it to reinstall it(something was wrong) and it froze while uninstalling and now everytime i want to install the damn thing it says i must remove the old one but i can't :(

I can its at 2.1GHz now but im looking for another temperature app since Easytune 5 screwed up=/ Won't let me install it again. :(

And are you able to overclock further than 2.1GHZ or like Tooks, are u stuck at 2.1GHZ?

Remember dont get too hung up on temperatures, if your computer is too hot it will become unstable and you will know that things are too hot. Sometimes the temps reported to you are inaccurate anyway.

I'm not sure yet, i shall have another go this evening and i will try to get to 2.5 with everything on stock and divider on 2.

Can you help me with my easytune problem, it's uninstalled but when i goto install it again it says its installed:/ will i have to go into the registry?

Im running Raid on mine and it doesnt seem to be affecting my overclock
