I've started logging the amount of fuel I use with each tank, and how many miles it covered.

The 'rough average' will only be vaguely accurate if you only put fuel in from empty to full.

The overall average will be accurate over time.

I keep mine on googledocs

Already been filling out a sheet almost exactly like that for ages, its called a fuel expenses form

That almost exactly the same as the one I designed for my car & bike. Pretty damn useful for those of us that don't have OBC

Got one for the mini. Since the head work, new valves and gaskets my economy has jumped from about 25mpg to about 37, and that's not driving very lightly!

I had a fuel spreadsheet that I filled in for over a year... then I found something else to fulfill my OCD

In truth it served its purpose- showed that the trip computer was accurate enough and that the fuel economy sat around 33mpg on average.
