i wanted 2 raptors for raid but cant afford it yet plus im only going for that graphics card as i dont need anything more.

I do quite a bit of encoding as previously mentioned so im hoping this will be ok with my os on the raptor and the other hdd for storage.

Im hoping to get good cooling with this setup so i can oc.

Your comments/advice is appreciated

Regards

Jody

faster ram, better cache on the drive, you could even raid 2 250b drives which would be a lot faster, better graphics which is good for media encoding :)

thanks for the reply

reasons for my choices:

read turniq tower was superior
i wanted 2gb modules of ram for upgrading purposes (8gb)
i want seperate storage drive
i just want the coolmaster case
the psu was recommended by loads of peeps here

will have a look at that case though and the ram, i want good overclocking gear as i plan to learn how

got to go and get drunk now...bugger! but your continued comments will be appreciated and ill get back tomorrow

thanks again

Jody

GFX is not better for media encoding.

He should have two seperate drives one for the OS and the other for DATA to improve IO speeds.

The First system he chose was fine.

He even specced a better PSU than you.

He specced a better cooler than you.

Jody,

You're better off with some WD AAKS or similar drives in RAID than raptors in RAID.

a) They're cheaper
b) The access time (the only advantage raptors have) isnt important in encoding

Raptors arent updated as frequently as other drives either, so generally lag behind tech wise.

The spec you specified in the original post is great but:

Id go for a pair of 250gb drives over the raptor, and partition for OS and WIP, with the large drive for storage.
Id get rid of that crap case, and go for a Lian-Li.

ok ive changed to 2 WD2500AAKS now plus my original choice of the WD5000AAKS, not sure about that case though will take another look as your not the first to mention thats a good case

A raptor for a boot drive should not be sniffed at.

I have 150 GIG raptor as boot and all my data across 3 500 GIG WDAAKS

Having a 500 GIG raid 0 array means you lose everything if windows corrupts and this is not a good idea.

Raid 0 is over rated.

Single raptor for the win.

will the raptor perform better on its own than 2 wd2500aaks's in raid?

Doing what?

Writing large files?

A seperate drive to the OS for your DATA is a must.

Been there seen and done Raid with my WD drives and I go back to the raptor.

People think Raid see big gains. It doesn't and its a PITA.

Then there is stripe size and all that nonsense.IMO its just not worth the hassle.

Im gonna be doing a lot of encoding

at least if i have one raptor i have the option to raid later if necessary

I do a huge ammount of encoding and video editing and rendering.

The speed comes from reading data from one drive while writing to a seperate drive.

Reading and writing to the same Raid 0 array is a bad idea and should not be recommended.
