Still quite new to 3D design, but love it all the same :) . Here i tried to make a room during late afternoon/sunset with a shadow of a tree being cast on a wall and a tv (a samsung hdtv i used to have when i first got my 360). Its still not done, i am goning to add a few more stuff. I know a few things are off i.e proportions, but still am well chuffed with what i got so far considering i made it all up in my head :D . 70-80% of the time so far is spent all on rendering when i make little changes, add stuff, remove stuff, etc, etc. Done this on a 2.2 ghz core 2 duo lappy, cant wait for my quad pc........should help a bit on rendering times :) .

If you set mentral ray as your renderer, and use a daylight lighting system(mr sun and Mr Physical Sky) your image will look 100% better it's already pretty good, but that would improve vastly, I think you'd be impressed with the results.

Some settings you might wanna know, when you set up daylight lighting system (found in create>systems), make sure you use MR SUN and MR PHYSICAL SKY. Before you render, make sure you assign the Mental Ray Renderer, in the Indirect Illumination tab, turn on Final gather, set diffuse bounces to 2, and Rays Per FG Point to 50 (use 50 for test renders but when rendering a final render use more (250+). Also, before you render, make sure you go to Render>environment, set exposure control to logarithmic exposure control and tick the box that says exterior daylight.

I apologize if that seems a bit patronising but i'm not sure of your knowledge of mental ray so i'm just trying to make it easier for ya!

Oh and one more thing, expect your render times to go up by quite a bit!

 hmm this is very tricky to use, i'm stuck in trying to get the ayellow/orange sun light. The shadow of the tree is also hard to get right. Also the top of the door is a little fubar'ed

There are some good books on lighting if your interested in learning more, [digital] Lighting & Rendering by Jeremy Birn and Mental Ray for Maya, 3ds Max, and XSI by Boaz Livny.

pretty slick compaired to my first piece of 3dsmax artwork. the lighting is awesome and the reflections on the floor are great too.

The second render is leagues ahead of the first one. You need to up your FG settings though. Are you using Area mode?
Turn the reflection level down on the floor.

Cheers mate, love the work in your section of deviant art.

What settings would you recommend, i'll tried using fg settings om high but its roughly the same with the tree shadow being casted? Also i have no idea what area mode is :D

what settings have you got on the sun system? Theres a few drop downs that need ot be changed iirc.

You seem to be pretty keyed up on this, understanding mentalray and dabbbling with final gather :)

I just normally whack fg to 200 for test render and anything from 500-700 for a final, depends on complexity of the scene. (2 hours a frame on a 1000frame animation did my nut in, so i used 100fg xD) Also set samples to 1/4 : 4 or so.

Thanks for all your help (got some excellent tips :D ), been busy so haven't had as much time as i would have liked to have messed around with mentalray, final gather or daylight options.

Right now i got two screenshots, the first looks clearer but for i prefer the second
