Well, I have decided to change my 470 GTX SLi rig for a single HD 7950.
The reason I have done so is all of the performance all of the time.
I am strictly a nVidia fan boy so I must admit I am apprehensive about going with ATi.
No trolling intended!
I just couldn't ignore the price and performance of the HD 7950 and I have gone for this one:

Will I have any problems with ancient games such as Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2?

I also play modern games such as World of Tanks and The Witcher and Witcher 2.

I don't know specifically about those games but you've got yourself a nice card. Post back if you are having any problems and I'm sure an AMD user will help :).

I use both nvidia and AMD and play Baldur's gate 2 a lot. I find it runs fine on both but visually it does look slightly different. I have not used a 7xxx series card but I can not imagine the game running any worse than my 5xxx series cards.

If you have any problems with your card get Minsc and Boo on the case.:D

I'm thinking about getting that card myself. Don't know yet. Looking to get 7950 for cheaper....lets see what ocuk does for deals in the next 2 weeks? If not I know of a few other places that do them, But love this site more.

ocuk please do a good deal this coming month:)

I've only ever had one issue with AMD cards before and that was running Psychonauts where in some of the latter levels the game would chew up all the VRAM and it would cause the game to slow down to a crawl. As far as I know this hasn't been fixed but other then that AMD/Nvidia cards have always been good and reliable and since you going with a single card you won't have SLI problems, microstutter issues going forward.

Specifically for World of Tanks, I'd worrd more about CPU grunt than graphic, as that game is pretty much a one core game. Hope you have something like an overclocked i5 or i7.

GOG is the best place for these ancient games.
They are patched, updated and work with modern machines.

Historically it has been nVidia cards that have had problems with Infinity engine games. From memory you have to disable the "3D" effects and use software rendering -or- use a really old driver. I had to do this with an 8800GT and the GTX460 I use now.

I don't know whether AMD cards have problems. Not heard of any.

Well it's here!
Rather nice too! Slightly bigger than my 470 GTX Twin Frozer II
I've tried WoT and Heaven 3.0, both run very smoothly.
That's what i'm after these days good quality visuals, as long as the framerate doesnt become like a slide show i'm happy!

I recently brought a 7950 after using only nvidia cards.

It was a upgrade from a gtx 285 and i have been chuffed with it. From you list of games i can only comment on wot and that runs fine.

Hi mate I ahve just ordered that card myself, could you tell me if its using the 7970 PCB? quickest way to tell is if it has 2x6 or 1x6+1x8 pin power sockets :)

Also If you could tell me what AV leads are installed I would be much grateful as the accessories list is missing from all the reviews I scanned.

It looks like a great card, it seems to be performing well.
It has 1x6 pin and 1x8 pin power connectors.

Accessories it comes with are:
  • Dual molex to 6 pin PCIe
  • Female 6 pin PCIe to male 8 pin PCIe
  • crossfire bridge
  • DVI to VGA
  • HDMI adaptor (possibly?)
