Hi.

I am planning my first build with one 290 with a view to upgrade to crossfire next year. I am on a bit of a budget so was wondering if I could get away with a DC i5 (over the more expensive i7). I have heard that the i7 would be optimal for a crossfire setup but was wondering if the difference is massive? also would something like a superflower leadex gold 850w be enough to run two cards?

The rig will be for gaming and general use so no media editing, photoshop etc.

I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Hi

If you are just gaming then the i5 will be fine. The i7 only offers hyperthreading, which most games don't make use of.

The EVGA Supernova G2 850 would be a better option as you get a longer warranty. It is enough for 290 crossfire.

cheers lee

is hyperthreading in games something that is going to become more common in the near future though?

Also with regards to the EVGA PSUs, are they rebranded superflowers?

It is possible that more games will use hyperthreading in the future, although an i5 will still work perfectly fine. The i7 would be more useful if you were doing things like video editing and rendering etc.

Yes the EVGA is a rebranded Superflower. It is based on the same Leadex platform.

Cheers mate. Thinking i'll stick to the i5 and go for the EVGA too. Powercolor 290 to go with ;)
