Hi, i just bought a Dell XPS 17 laptop and i am very disappointed by the gaming performance (should have expected for laptop) so i have decided to send it back and build a pc which can handle games at MAX settings. The pc will be used for video encoding, surfing the web and msn etc, but mostly gaming. I have put together a few items that i think should be good enough now and in the future.

What do you guys think? any changes you would make? or suggestions? I would really appreciate some input from you guys ( me = noob )

Thanks

Pretty good I think though I would suggest possibly getting a higher rated PSU something like a 800-850. nVidia cards are power hungry though the 5 series are better than the 4 series but I would (in your position) still prefer a bit of room since you still have to connect your drives etc which all require power.

I run the GTX480 on a Antec TruePower 850W.

Overall though awesome spec!

unless he is planning to use two 580's in crossfire, he wont need any more power. a 600W PSU would be fine for 1 card

sli 570 goodness :)

wow thanks for quick replies. I dont do a lot of video encoding just some, but i am thinking that if i get i5 i will surely in 1 years time be upgrading to i7 so might as well get it now.

I already have 2 dvd drives as well as 3 hard drives. So i won't buy new ones. I also have Windows 7.

ah cool, thanks stulid and everyone else.

now contemplating i5 or i7.. hmmmm

i just want to build a pc now and keep for a long time and i will update gfx card when appropriate. I'm just thinking that if i buy the i5, how long will it be before it becomes difficult for it to handle new games (ps. hope this comment isnt noob lol)

Either will be good for a number of years, before the games catch up. The i7 gives more performance for CPU and thread intensive tasks, the i5 is just as good for gaming and the rest. Games won't make much use of hyperthreading for a while.

What you save on the i7, you gain on the graphics card.

bit OTT! :)

Another system, more of a home computer than a full on gaming rig, but those 6950 are real fast. Can swap for an unlockable 6950, but I still think it's overkill, especially right now. Added a SSD for QuickSync SSD caching on the Z68, or just as a plain OS drive, and a cooler for 4.8GHz minimum overclock on the i7. Also overkill.

You can go either way. Either a i5-i7 with a 580 and not leaving much for the rest, or spread it a bit and get quality components while still monstering games.
