Hi all
I just purchased all the components for my new set-up and just wanted to get some feedback from some of your experienced builders who do similar work to me.
Basically the machine will be used for web/grapic design apps like photoshop, dreamweaver, flash, illustrator, poser, quark, indesign etc.
I very rarly play games and would like to run 2 monitors.
Here is what I went for :

ASUS P5B Pentium 4/Celeron/Pentium D/PentiumEE/65nm dual-core/Core2Duo/Core2EE

Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13ghz - Skt775 Fsb1066 2mb Cache Boxed In

Asus Nvidia 7300GS 256MB PCI-E

Corsair 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 667MHz 2x64Mx64 non-ECC 2x240 DIMM Unbuffered CL5 Lifetime Warranty

Antec TruePower II 480W PSU

Jeantech phong II

costing 465 pounds

How have i done and do you have any suggestions ?

Thanks for all comments received

I'd change the Antec for another brand (like Seasonic/Enermax) and try to get 2GB of RAM in the build.

Too late hes already got them ;)

Looks ok, but youre not goping to do much gaming with that gfx card

I have ordered but it would be no problem to change.
I never play games the odd one here and there but mostly never.
what 2gb of mem would you suggest ?

thanks for the help.

well i didnt really want to go over 470 for the components i listed because i still have to get an optical drive, hard drive and 19" tft.
but if the changes to the original components only change the price by upto $70 ($ means pound wrong setting) and will offer me something significant id go for it

if your gonna overclock

I would change that:

Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13ghz - Skt775 Fsb1066 2mb Cache Boxed In

for either a e6300

if your not going overclock then I would get the

e6600

Right...

If you were going to overclock then its better to go for a e6300 because:

a) its cheaper
b) you could overclock to over the stock speed of a e6400
c) has the same cache size as the e6400

so you pay less but get better peformance...

If you were not going to overclock

then I would settle for a e6600

as it has 4mb cache instead of the 2mb that comes with the e6400 and because it runs faster at stock speeds..

Ultimately my concept is based on pay less for the same performance as long as you are going to overclock...

The only reason why e6400 is better than e6300 when not overclocking is because the e6400 runs a few hundred mhz faster, performance I hugely doubt you would notice...

thanks

Edit: oops, said exactly the same thing, missed post above
Cos the E6300 is the same as the E6400 just a lower clock speed so if your gonna overclock hes saying whats the point?

The E6600 is the first chip with the larger cache and it is 2.4 Ghz, which is where Core 2 Duo really starts to shine and is at the FX-62 beating stage. Doesn't really matter though, even the E6300 at stock is around an X2 4200+/4400+ in games.

so i would be better off with a 6600 because of the bigger cache, as i plan to run various programmes at the same time ie. illustrator & flash. this would suit me better ?
i doubt i will overclock as my knowledge is pretty pathetic.
is there a big difference from 6400 to 6600 ?

If you are not going to overclock you would still be better off with the E6300 as its cheaper than the e6400....

Buying the e6400 u will only see 200 - 300mhz difference...you wont even notice the diff...

If you bought the E6600 I doubt you would ever use the 4mb cache as you wouldnt be video editing or anything....

I have a 2mb cache and its never used, no matter how many adobe, macromedia progs I run and what games I play at full settings...

I dont like seeing ppl waste their cash....

thanks xirokx i appreceiate the advice, so no matter what programmes i use ie adobe, macromedia i wont benifit performance wise with a 6600 over a 6400/6300 that make the change worthwhile ?

the only difference is speed and cache size...

the e6400 has the same size cache but runs ever so slighter faster

the e6600 runs 600mhz faster which is noticeable and has extra 2mb cache

BUT

the price diff between e6300 and e6600 is £100 i think.....

for what you will be doing and using this system for its just not worth it...

The only thing you will notice is a few extra secs it will take each prog to open up...otherwise multi tasking wise with each prog will be fine no matter which cpu you use

if you were going to be video editing I would say go for the e6600 but your not...so save the £100 and take your gf out or something ;)

Just seen the gpu u gone for a 7300gs now I know you wont be gaming but that card is not too good....

I dont know what resolution your screen will be at i.e. 1024 x 784 or 1280 x 1024...

But for an extra 30 quid I would seriously consider getting a 7600 gfx card...just incase you take to game playing you will have to fork out an extra £100 for a decent gfx card where as if you spend the little extra now it will do you for some time...

See gfx cards have 256mb and 512mb, you are better off with 512mb when gaming, but as your not 256mb would suffice, then the size of screen you would be gaming at comes into consdieration also....if you do opt to go for the E6300 chip then look you saved yourself £100, so got for a 7600 512mb....overall you still save some money and that way if you wanna play games you can....it just be cheaper to do it now then to do it later, either way dont go for a 7300 if u have to then go for 7600 256mb and if u wanna go that extra lil mile go for the 7600 512mb

re: RAM

2gb would be good too have

Any 2g GEIL or GSKILL kit I would say is good ensure its PC6400 though...although double check that I get confused with the diff MHZ speeds for which conroe chips etc etc ...
