hello everyone,

i am currently chosing the parts for my new computer that i am going to make and i would like some others opinion on them.

i have currently got: (from my old computer)
gigabyte GTX 460
400W PSU

these are the parts that have first picked out:

AMD Quad Core Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz

Asus M4A87TD EVO AMD 870

Samsung Spin Point F3 SATAII 1TB 32MB Cache Hard Drive

Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

CoolerMaster Elite 430 Midi Case

bearing in mind that i am on a budget so i dont think i will be able to go much higher cost wise, but exceptions can be made.

What do you think?

cheers

Tom

what are you using the machine for? ram seems a bit overkill tbh, what PSU is it? i wouldnt trust an unbranded cheapo with all that kit and a GTX460

also, what is your budget?

It will be mainly used for editing (got all the Adobe Cs5) and a bit of gaming and movies etc. overkill on ram is good for editing, so i will problably go up to 16 gigs when i have the money.
As fot the PSU, its from 2003 but it was good back then. i dont think its a rubbish cheapo, but it seemed to handle the GTX 460 ok for the past few months in my old system.

i think 500 is my budget max, that includes the OS (windows 7 home premium 64 bit) i am relying on money for my 17th in a few weeks time.

Although I'm worried about running such a high end system off a 8 year old PSU!

For that reason, here is an AMD build that lets you get a new PSU in there that will last another 8 years :p

YOUR BASKET

1 x AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £98.39
1 x Corsair XMS3 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (CMX8GX3M2A1600C9) £89.99
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-00599) £79.99
1 x MSI 880GMA-E45 AMD 880G (Socket AM3) DDR3 microATX Motherboard £74.99
1 x XFX Pro 650W Core Edition Power Supply £65.99
1 x Antec 100 One Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black £43.99
1 x Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST31000528AS) £38.99
Total : £504.92 (includes shipping : £10.50).

that interesting, thanks for the consideration, much appreciated. it all depends how much i get for my birthday, and as my parents are paying for driving lessons for my 17th, i dont think they will be that generous on providing funds.

lets assume that they will pay VAT with the i5 build. so £502 is 80% (which is what i would pay) so with £502 at 80% 627.5 would be 100%. shall we see what we can do with £627?

cheers

Tom

also, i think (as this build is more of a editing one) more PCI slots would be usefull, like addition USB and fire wire, with a wireless card and possibly a physx dedicated card (my old 8600gt possibly) an ATX board may be of consideration.

tom

8600GT won't manage PhysX - ideally you need at least a 8800GTS 512mb.

FireWire really isn't used any more, but should you need it I can send you an adpater for cost of postage.

Don't think you'll ever use more than 12 USBs either :p

With the i5 build, just add a GTX460 768mb to get to your budget and get a card that will run CUDA and PhysX with ease.

However, that's still running a top end system off a crappy PSU, so I would add the same graphics card to the AMD build
