Hey just joined the forum and I am looking for some advise if possible!

I am an avid gamer and recently started to do a lot of video editing ( 4k ). I have had computers in the past but only really built from a company, I think I understand everything I need to buy but unsure how exactly to go about it. My budget is max of 1500 pounds, I want the capability to run high demand games and for it to be also a video editing power house. Would anyone be kind enough to maybe discuss best options? I am also not entirely sure on the exact components needed for a full build as I am a bit new and never really done this before!

@liam mcintoh

welcome,

what programs do you use or would you use for 4K editing ? recommend having a look at Davinci Resolve - as its free and likes high spec hardware. takes full advantage of multiple cores/threads and high powered GPU. More people switch over to it from Adobe Prem.

what monitor do you also have ? sounds like you already have a 4k monitor ?

I am currently using adobe premier pro and some other adobe software, however my macbook im currently using is struggling to even render 1080p 24fps footage, I am used to premier pro but I might look at changing in the future. Cant fully remember what monitors I have they are LG, ill just clarify I haven't actually done any editing in 4k as of yet but my ambition is to work towards it, I will be also looking into monitors, any advise on those too would be great.

looks like then, its to speak for 4k for your future plans and should more then handle 1080p now for yourself .
also allows bigger chunk to be spent for the hardware as seems monitor will come at a later point , or could speak to allow decent HDR 4K monitor and GPU to handle 1080p gaming

out of curiosity , whats your current hardware on Macbook?

articles for reading and helps with researching system spec. Not sure if you'll be Using Adobe After Effects on top of Premier but worth looking into

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/a...Comparison-AMD-Ryzen-2-vs-Intel-8th-Gen-1137/

Intel still has advantage with Adobe programs but AMD Ryzen isn't to far being whilst being cheaper and has a longer shelf life in theory- as well as other programs using the cores better then adobe.

General AMD vs Intel performance with Prem

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/a...ormance-Core-i7-8700K-i5-8600K-i3-8350K-1047/

again Ryzen doesn't fare to badly against Intel

as for graphics. dont think you'll be using a 10bit display, recommended for pure 4k workstations but Workstation cards required to run them cant really play games.

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-CC-2018-Workstation-GPU-Performance-1116/

gtx 1070-1080ti level will handle 4k rendering nicely!

I do intend to work with 4K in the near future so I am trying to provide for that now as I would really prefer to build the best I can now and not have to upgrade for some time! Yeah also with monitors I have not considered that in my tower build so I do not know what kind of budget I am currently looking at, I forgot to mention that I also have a tower desktop, I have had it for a long time now and really have only upgraded the ram, it does the job for my current gaming crave but its just dated and I really want to start fresh, and to be honest does not run high demanding games.

So my macbook, I never thought I would be doing any kind of video editing when I purchased it, its around 5 years old now but I did recently add more ram and and needed a new drive, it does what I need to do at the moment but its slow, old and very frustrating, I am currently not at home for long periods of time so it is not bad to use but I plan to have my own little editing office when I am home more which should be soon, my mac will just be something I can take anywhere, maybe for editing on the run and to just browse the net ect.

Macbook
Macbookpro 8,1
intel core i5
processor speed 2.4ghz
no. of processors 1
2 core
l2 cache per core 256
l3 cache 3mb
memory 16gb

I will take a look into links, with me being kind of new into this and what is best in terms of performance it could take me some time to actually work out what suits me best as there is so much choice!

for monitors I was really considering the LG34UC98 but it could be a little out of budget as that I do really want 2 as that is my current setup in my " office " back home.

if you could state whats in your old PC , might help if anything can be salvaged etc

dont forget wide screens often act as two screen on one physical screen . although I tend to quote 4k monitors for those wanting to do 4k video editing as its a like or like native resolution, not not always needed. and gaming on 4k is a little bit of a struggle at the moment

I would have to have a good look, it is very dated, I think around a year ago I added some DD03, but I would say its easily 6/7 year old tech, I could be possibly passing it on to my friend also so I don't think that I will be looking to salvage. ( it is very very very dated )

ryzen 2700x with 8 cores and 16 threads, whether adobe programs or latest Soney Vegas or Davinci resove (free), will eat up 4k editing and rendering!
GTX 1080 will provide damn good performance for any effects used on renders as well as good very high FPS for current AAA tiles at 1080p or 1440p on Ultra settings!

leaves £300 to save up for HDR 4K screen or on the Ultra wide screen you displayed above :)

GTX is on sale till end of today along with case which has high reviews. not sure how long bundle deal is on but comes with free 480GB SSD.. or techincally (£66 off it with that selected ram)

That looks like a good deal! the AMD bundle is a bargain, I am thinking to go fully with the 1500 build, what else would you get to get the price up there ? just want the most for my money, I think my budget is 1000 for the monitors.

really appreciate the help, would it be worth getting a bigger hard drive?

good choice for monitors

For your 4K editing you could try Davinici Resolve, is free at this moment but I believe is beta mode, works very well unless you can just jump from mac to windows adobe.

I will try get both maybe to see what I think, I hope to put a order in, in the coming weeks. What operating system are most people using? I dont even know the best way going about getting one now its been that long. Is there anything else in that list that I really need for the build?

download windows 10 media creation tool. save windows ISO to USB stick. slap it in new build and boot off it, install and then pay for a CD key - saves a lot of cash.

If you waiting for tech then wait. with amd and intel now being competitive . market changes fast and so do prices. seen ram shoot up 150% and now slowly decreasing

prob wouldn't need HDD as that can always be added later - but the rest is the core components . believe sales end 6pm tonight. as always. if in DOUBT, check, double check, if your not happy then you wait :)

Do the deals come up often? or would certain items be worth purchasing first? I would really like to wait some weeks first. Would it be ok with you to just have a chat before I go through with the purchase again? Just want to get the best for my cash available.

Liam

They float about weekly, as do bundle deals every few months. Next big one naturally will be black Friday I'm guessing . By then intel 9th Gen will be out and Nvidia Next Gen cards as well etc .

As always older gen will fall in price and can do what you want, but newer tech will do it faster, efficient etc :)
