My first GPU failure?

Hello all, came for a bit of advice on one of my GPU's - as in my sig says I run crossfire 7950's (until middle of last week), Diablo 3 expansion was released last Tuesday and that's pretty much all I've been doing - on Tuesday after a few hours playtime my pc froze up and had to be restarted, took this as a sign from the heavens - it was getting late so I thought nothing of it, next day I got the same problem, playing for a while then pc froze - now I payed attention - their was some artifacting this time before the pc froze up - screen went blank and needed to be restarted so I had a look and noticed that my top gpu seems to be getting worse

(I have posted before that the gpu looks to be coming away from the fan - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18538068 )

and it seemed worse than when I took those pics, so I took the top 7950 out and have been playing peacefully since last Wednesday without any freezes or lock ups, today I decided to see if it was the 7950 acting up or something else in my rig - so I loaded up firemark extreme (best thing I could think of that quickly stresses gpu) and put the suspected working gpu (the gpu Ive been using from last Wednesday) through it twice - no issues, I swapped out gpus and tried the one I think has been having issues and the results:

1st test - bad artifactiing and crash almost immediatly

okay so I have the card O.C'd. perhaps its just this so I used the default settings (clocks)

2nd test - going good - got through the first stage and was on gpu test 2 on firemark extreme - then blank screen and no dvi signal on monitor- had to restart pc

3rd test - default clocks but fan speed at 100% - passed firemark with no issues

4th test - kept default clocks but turned off the 100% fan speed again - exact same result as test 2 - 2nd gpu test in firemark then no dvi signal and required restart and even after 2 restarts (with the pc apparently on) no screen display

So it looks like this is my 1st failed component - where do I go from here? the card was ordered on 16 Sep 2012 and I'm not 100% sure what sort of warranty came with it - think it might be 2 years but not 100% - any advice would be greatly appreciated :) - Doco.

HIS defo offer a 2 years manufacturer warranty - however, the caveat is that the cooler must not be removed/ replaced. They may try to claim that the cooler has been replaced as a way to get out of dealing with you. I would certainly deal with the retailer first and see how you get on.

You COULD perhaps attempt to repair the card yourself if you suspect that the fault is linked to the seperation of the pcb and the cooler. However, in doing so you would likely have to remove the cooler to re-apply TIM etc and in doing so would void the warranty as I have explained.

The problem you have is that these cards are EOL, so getting a replacement would be unlikely, although I am certain that you can crossfire with either a 280 or 280X

I believe this is the card they would most likely replace it with

Ah now I have gone and done something stupid then - I had a look on the back - and as suggested in the previous thread - tired to see if tightening any screws would help - and somehow managed to break the top of one of the screws ffs :-/ (after I did this I was pretty sure I knew what was going to happen) - I'l give ocuk a phone or something tomorrow see if I can get something sorted - I've not removed the cooler nor tampered with the voltages etc.

If things happen to work out for the best - a 280 is pretty much a 7950 anyways? (however I did get sorta lucky in the silicon lottery - been running the gpu at 1200mhz since I got it)

Excellent news that you bought from ocuk in that case - always found their customer service to be first class. Perhaps post in the cs section and link to this thread and your previous thread so that they can have as much detail as possible to work with.

And yes, from what I understand 280= 7950 & 280X= 7970

Of course I bought from ocuk ;-) - took your advice and posted in C.S. Section, just have to wait and see :-)
