My first high-end computer

Hey guys, I found about you people from google and have been reading a lot of information lately here.
I am an architectural student who requires Autodesk Revit(3D software) , 3DS MAX( again, 3D rendering software) constantly and therefore I need to purchase a computer. Right now I have a Dell XPS studio 16 ( 8GB ram 1600 mhz ,500 GB HDD 7200 rpm, i5 M430. I purchased this right when Intel i series was launched and it costed me around $2400. Now it is available for $1000 and less :\ ) Anyway, coming to the topic.

I am thinking of getting the following stuff, please guide me for the same.

1TB Hard disk. 7200 rpm
240 GB SSD. ( People are recommending me OCZ company but I really have no idea about the company, please guide me with the price-vs-performance thing)
Intel 3930K Processor
32 GB ram 1600Mhz
2 GB graphic card ( Model still not decided. Please help me out here. Some people say that AMD is better for 3ds max but i really don't know)
Mother board not decided.

Cooler master cabinet and others are variants not really a matter of huge confusing.



Please guide me. My budget is maximum $2K. Also, I live in India if that is a matter required for costing. But putting the costing aside, firstly I want to know about the specs I should use. Also a guy told me that AMD+its supportable motherboard is a cheaper and better combo than 3930+motherboard.

Please comment on that too.

I would get a 3770K system for less money and good performance.

If you want 32GB RAM, you will need Win 7 professional.

GPU can be lowered if you are not gaming. a 560ti should be enough for your usage.

Something like that. Since you're speaking in $$$, I suspect you will purchase from somewhere else.

In any case :

Samsung 830 SSD. Very good, reliable.
Corsair OBsidian 550D : Quiet case.
Phantek : Quiet and performant air cooler.
Gigabyte UD3H : Good performance and quality, extra rigid for big air coolers, you don't need to go overboard for the motherboard.
2TB green drive : Quiet, Western Digital which has the better record in terms of reliability. SSD speed will take most of the demanding stuff.
750W Gold PSU : Good efficiency, fully modular, very quiet.
NVIDIA 670 : Nvidia usually best for modelling software due to support (CUDA, PhysX). Probably can get away with a 560ti / 570 for your modelling.
XMS3 memory : Don't need the speedy stuff.
You can of course go 3930K and X79, and 1800MHz RAM, but IMO bit OTT unless you have £2,500 to throw around. But given your budget, a 3770K sounds about right.

If this is too expensive, you can cut down on the components, but basically, 3770K, good air cooling (or maybe even water cooling loop like the H80 if you live in hot weather), a NVidia card, and a decent case. CoolerMaster does the Silencio range which is ok.

I would always go Intel.

There is a lot of things you can change, and easily cut $400 off the budget.

I don't know where you plan on purchasing your hardware, so the prices are a rough estimate.

I am speaking in $$ because after sometime I have become used to it. My currency here is INR. I have learned the quick conversion rate in my mind and speak in $$ because of its world wide acceptance. I will be purchasing from here only. That is only why I have joined this forum.

Depends on the source. Only reputable retailers, for things that expensive.

You will have to cut down on a few things if you go with a 3930K.

I also wanted to know that will the parts vary for my country's electric system and voltage? I mean, they must be manufacturing country specific products, right? I am from India.

That would be on the PSU's end. It depends if the PSU can cope with various voltages. India appears to be 230V, which is the same as over here. Usually it's either 115V / 220V, and some PSUs automatically sense the voltage.

I'm curious as to how you will transport the PC to india, if you are gonna build it and setup yourself, and if you cannot get cheaper components from over there.

GPU = graphics card. You will need one (it's in the specs).

Another thing to consider is getting a professional graphics card. A NVidia Quadro. Usually, pound for pound, they perform pretty bad in games, but better with modelling software and have better compatibility.

Secondly, I'm not sure you need 256GB space on the SSD. 128GB would be enough for storing the OS and software.

Also, what are Internal SSDs? I just searched them over the net and they seem to be quite cheaper. Can you throw some light on that?

What part of India are you from? I know that some parts have very dirty power outputs and power outages (though they are mainly on schedules).

Regardless, spend more on a Power Supply that offer protection. It isn't worth killing your components.
