Hi,

I've used laptops for years (work, etc) but have only just purchased my first one, and I have a few simple questions.

Bought from Comet. No Recovery CDs given, and there's a 25gb hidden partition that Windows 7 sees as empty.

I want to reinstall Windows 7 from scratch. So I will grab a friends copy of Win7 Home Premium and use my Key to do a fresh install.

1 - Is there useful on the 25gb partition? I would rather get rid of everything to leave me as much space as possible. I don't need any "recovery" partitions.

2 - Should I register with the Asus website? I assume the Comet Receipt is enough for any warranty claims.

3 - I see Windows 7 is capable of automatically finding drivers, etc. I assume it will find everything for me to use the Laptop fully once I do the reinstall, i.e. I do not need to get any Asus specific drivers (I do not want their added software).

For reference, I'm going to make three partitions; Windows 7, Ubuntu and "storage". I may make a forth, so I have the option to try out Windows 8 should I wish to sometime in the future.

Cheers,

You might need some specific Asus drivers if it has any fancy function keys, but most can be installed from windows updates , that said I would always use manufacturer supplied drivers from their site. The recovery partition won't be needed if youre using a vanilla Windows install. I would register with Asus as I believe they actually do the warranty repairs.

1) Not particularly, but you'll be kicking yourself if you ever do need it.
2) Yes yes yes yes yes. They do the RMAs and the warranties, and so on.
3) Normally, it finds drivers for any mouse, hard drive, keyboard, and most wireless dongles I care to plug into it.

The partitioning is sensible, but remember, you don't need a big partition if its just the OS on it, make sure you get enough storage on your shared partition.

Thanks...

I should have mentioned, Ubuntu is my main OS. I'll be using/keeping Windows seeing as the laptop comes with a licence. So recovery/failure isn't too big of a deal for me.

My plan is something like, 20gb Win7, 20gb Ubuntu, 20gb spare and then rest to "shared" - off a 750gb hdd.

Cool, will defo register with Asus then :)

First thing I do with a new laptop is wipe it and install a fresh clean OS, removing the old paritions
