My first little overclock

Hi all I just tried overclocking my i7 4770k upto 4.0 as a test. I put the voltage to adaptive mode on my sabertooth mother board and left it as it was as it was a small overclock.

When I looked on cpuid and hwmonitor the idle temps were normal but when the cpu increased to 4000 MHz as it does randomly, the temps spiked up to around 40 oC and the core voltage went up from 0.7 to 1.154.

when I was gaming and it was a constant 4000 MHz the temps hit around 60.

Basically is this normal or am I just doing it all wrong with the whole adaptive thing?

Cheers for the reply. Its the first time I have overclocked so I just wanted to take it real easy.

I was just really worried about that voltage when its running at 4.0. thought that might be a bit high, plus I didnt set it, I left the voltage alone.

No it's not too high.

My motherboard has an auto overclock button that runs my 4770K at 4.2Ghz and the voltage that it sets too is just a bit higher than yours is.

You obviously have a decent cooler so good to go :)

I just tried setting my asus motherboard to the 'optimal' mode wher it overclocks its self and was hitting 4.3 with a voltage of 1.207. Anyone tell me if thats good or too high, or best to set it myself?
