Cheers in advanced

I want to use it as my main machine i think. i like how smooth it runs.

i spose video editing, media streaming, lots of web authoring etc

sorry i guess what i wanted to know is how can i make good use of a mac.

ive used pcs always so dont have a clue about macs.

Video editing on a G3 PowerPC chip :D good luck. (Joke ;))

Would be fine for media streaming music and low/medium bitrate video. Maybe even a bit of web authoring if you used the right software.

If it has a recent version of Mac OS X on it, it serves as a perfectly capable machine. Can pretty much do anything apart from heaving lifting such as video and image processing. Great machine to learn about Mac OS X too.

I always thought the g3 chips were good?
are there any good free defrag apps for osx?

i think i have osx 10.4

thanks again

You can stream music with iTunes or if you connect to a network share you can stream pretty much anything.

As for software VLC is good for both music and video.

Textmate is one that comes to mind for websites if you can use a non-WYSIWYG editor.

Pretty ancient, they have pretty weak FPU performance and lack many of the basic processor extensions which speed up multimedia processing.

Think self-running Unix scripts in Mac OS X take care of this, HFS+ as a file system is quite resistant to defragmentation so I don't think it is needed personally.

think i have osx 10.4

that is the highest OS you can get for your machine, so your pretty much set.

Might be worth running software update to get the latest updates too if haven't already.

I think you're going to struggle. The eMac wasn't available as a G3, it was released as a G4 back in 2002! The chances are that you have a 2005 model (still G4) but you've got to remember that it's four years old which is pretty ancient in computing terms. Specifications are here

For simple web, mail, etc it'll be fine but not for much more.

Ok it could be a G4 then hehe.

thanks for the info!

ill see how it goes for a main rig... if its no good ill sell it and buy a mac mini hehe

Cheers

There are many people that are currently using a Mac Mini (G4) as a main machine. I think G4's are quite capable machines for anything except Video editing.

If you think it's a G3 chip, it will most likely be an iMac - they came in all different colours.

You could consider a Macbook as well. I just managed to buy my first Mac for £340 from the bay. Dual Core, 80GB with 1GB of RAM, and £20 for 2GB of RAM from OcuK. Should hopefully be fast enough for my needs. :D

My vote for a Macbook...just sold mine and very excited about buying a new one in the summer when the free iPod offer starts.

hmm defo is g4. i think im going to buy a vga adaptor and hook it up to the tv.

it seems to do all the normal things i would do on my pc so ill keep it till i can afford a better mac.
