My first overclocking project!

OK, my RAM is fine... the 'small' test is failing too.

One thing I did notice is that cpu-z is reporting that my voltage is dropping to 1.36 from 1.376 when I run Orthos. I thought I'd turned off all the limiting options in the BIOS. Is there something I'm missing?

Also, when I manually set the voltage value in the BIOS, it's being reported differently from within Windows.

Will try and set to 1.45

That makes me feel better.... currently 45°c, although Orthos has failed after 10 mins. Was a lot better than before though, after failing pretty much right away.

Am I hitting the max of my CPU now? Temps seem fine, but I'm wary of increasing the voltage too much.

my CPU likes its volts but doesn't really get that hot to be honest - ie the delta between low overclock and high overclock + high vcore isn't that different

1.41 Vcore @ 3.06 gig = 59 worst case Orthos

1.52 Vcore @ 3.35 gig = 65 worst case Orthos

not a huge difference considering the difference in Vcore.

these are speed-fan temps - the 65C is actually about 63 in TAT - which I'm just about happy with.

PS Overclocking reminds me of Cooking - constant fiddling with the recipe to see whats best - so for instance

3.2 gig = something like 1070 MHz 5-5-5-15 - which my Ballistix was happy with at stock volts (2.2V)

move up to 3.35G and now RAM at 2:3 is 1120 - which my Ballistix is not happy with.

so now 3.35G with RAM one divider down - ie the tighter 4:5 - and now at 960 - but at 4-4-4-10

because of the tighter timings the RAM at 960 4-4-4-10 is as quick as the 1120 CAS5 - but its all a game to see what is stable and what isn't.

Tell you what - I sometimes think we're too worried with mid-60s -70s temps really - I've had mine running on Orthos at about 63C for last 30 mins or so - just touched both the heatsink (Freezer 7 Pro) and the heatpipes and theydon't even feel warm ! When I overclocked my P4 - which was at 65C (case temp though) I actually burnt three stripes of the heatsink onto my finger !

Mark.

nice going. :)

I bought the exact same cpu/mobo/ram the other day and had a go at overclocking it last night. Only using the stock cooler though, and after 10 mins of Orthos @ 9x340 1:1, stock volts (3GHz) my core temp was 75c. :(

gonna wait till i get a s775 top for my TDX waterblock then have another go.
