my first xfire experience

well picked up yet another 280x tonight (god these things are so cheap second hand atm) and decided to give xfire a quick first attempt.


was filled with fear and thoughts of major driver conflicts and games just generally not wanting to play.


after an initial bit of head scratching after my brilliant plans backfired I was up and running.


I had a pair of 280xs over 2 rigs one sapphire vapour X in my rig and a MSI gaming edition 280x.


so anyway I managed to pick up a second MSI card and had the great plan to lob the sapphire into my daughters rig and put the matching msi cards into mine in xfire.

well that was problem no 1 the sapphire is a triple slot number and didn't want to fit into my daughters SFF case :(

so I ended up with what I was convinced was a non starter a mixed bag of
280xs.

long story short threw the msi into my rig turned it on and hey presto everything works straight away, no driver conflicts no issues and everything I've tried so far seems to run fantastic.


World of tanks at full details has went from mid 40 fps to 75-80fps which is the main thing I play apart from FM so very very happy, but its not just numbers, the whole thing just looks so much smoother.

going to have to try a few other games to make sure everythings fine but seemed to be very straightforward and working out the box is always a bonus :)


now just to find yet another MSI or another Sapphire
 
quite happy with the way its turned out :)


currently scouring the MM for yet another 280x to add to the collection, ideally I can find a sapphire and end up with 2 xfire setups one for mine and one for my boys rig
 
Just in the though process of upgrading from my 7970's to some SLI970's or holding out for a few more months to see what the next AMD cards bring to the table.
 
Really glad your multi-GPU experience is a positive one, and thanks for posting (so often you only see the negative). I always think GPUs should live in pairs, one looks so lonely on it's own in a case. :)
 
need a little mobo upgrade next :) poor little Z77 that I currently have doesn't have room for a third 280
 
I've rarely had issues with multi-card setups on either side (unless there was a hardware fault). I think they're much better than they used to be.

I have found that a few games seem to disagree with crossfire 290s at 4K when they worked fine with crossfire 7950s at 1080p. Not sure what that's about...
 
Curious, do you get a lot of texture flicker in WOT? As far as I was last aware, crossfire isn't supported in the game and the only way to get it to work is using AFR mode which casues bad texture flicker.

Glad it worked out for you, 2 card setups seems to virtually double your FPS nowadays, i remember when i first went into sli years it want supported in most games, and the ones where it was ya didnt see a great improvement. I remember seeing about 10fps gains in some games when i enabled the second card.

This is how the silent majority find Crossfire these days. Glad you're enjoying it.
 
yep i have had 5 crossfire setups and all have worked fine, i sometimes wonder why i ever sold my 7970 xfire, should have kept it and saved a small fortune
 
Same here no real issues. Looking forward to the newer cards when they come along hopefully less power draw and heat output. I'll also look for a motherboard with more space between the cards!

works a charm no flickering with all details maxed nudging 80fps

mildly overclocked 2600k that i've been threatening to replace every new intel release for the last 3 years but at 4.4ghz theres nothing to tempt me :(
 
The best thing about cross firing 2 of these cards is once you get into a game you can quite happily turn off the central heating and there no chance youll get cold. Especially when ya combine it with a 4790k. :)
