My friend has her heart set on an Ipad, not an apple fan myself but i will agree that net surfing on an Ipad is a pretty good experience, that so far i have yet to see equaled on any other tablet (no doubt this well change in future).

anyway as i know pretty much nowt about ipads can anyone tell me what Ipads really fails on and what other tablets do much better?

can anyone tell me how annoying getting your own films on it are, what it can play format wise. is Itunes a pain in the behind etc. what about music too?

Thx

P

I think if you have a friend that wants an iPad, I don't really think you should try and talk her out of it... if you do, the moment anything goes wrong, or things aren't as easy as they are on the iPad, you'll never hear the end of it.

Personally I prefer using Android because of it's simple plug and play, copying media across from PC to the device (like a removable drive) and you are good to go with the right player apps; whereas for IOS, you'd always have to put up with the iTune interfacing for medias and the syncing etc, which kinda have kinda like "must do things the apple way".

If I had to choose, I'd take a Nexus 10 over a Ipad. But that's just me.

same here im no apple fan, i just want to know the posatives and negatives for the Ipad. so i can offer a balanced opionion. she won't know about the itunes way of doing think she is not tech savy.its up to her which one she chooses in the end. i asked why she liked and she said that she liked how simple it was to use.

but any thoughts would be welcomed :)

If she wants simplicity then the Ipad will be the best option. In terms of performance/price, then any other tablet is the winner in my eyes. If you can convince her otherwise, the Nexus 10 is fantastic, speedier, more customisable and better to use in my opinion.

For the price you pay for an Ipad, you can get much better for half the price. See if she's open to option such as the Nexus, if not, an Ipad will be much more suited for simplicity.

GL with iTunes! :)

yes the nexus 10 is the one i'd recommend, would love to see an updated Nexus 10 at Google I/O this week as a sneeky surprise. but its not for me and well its her choice at the end of the day.

I had a Nexus 7 and changed to an Ipad mini. The Ipad is leagues ahead of the Nexus in terms of user experience in my opinion. It just works so well.

I have an ipad 2. Originally bought for taking to work, watching films while travelling and also surfing net as well as possibly a couple of games.

Total waste of money in terms of work. Very severely limited in terms of using office apps and modifying documents/spreadsheets etc.

Films/video are ok and some apps are good but itunes is the most hair tearingly annoying piece of software ever! After the ipad was wiped, it lost my apps and the process to go through to reinstall them was painful. If you download an app from the US store, it won't show and it tried to make me pay again for apps I had already bought.

Now use a dell xps win8 tablet and could not be happier. So easy to use and I can work, watch films and actually play PC games on it (albeit with low settings). It was more expensive but the ipad was essentially a big paperweight for me eventually so I binned it (gave it to my wife).

Hi alex,

am I able to quite literally plug an external HDD into this thing and watch movies/view photos etc from it?

I looked at the dell site and one of the suggested extras was an external HDD, so I assume this is possible?

Did you go for the keyboard? It seems very expensive for what it is, are there alternatives?

Cheers,
Tommy

Hi Tommy,

I have the Dell XPS 12 ultrabook/tablet which comes with a built in keyboard and flipscreen to enable full tablet or laptop mode depending on what you want.

Mine is the bog standard one for £1k. The slightly better ones have better processors, more RAM and more SSD capacity. Full USB 3.0 compatibility so you can plug in your HDD etc... exactly as you would any other laptop. I cannot describe how good this thing is. Really fast, really light and very versatile. With the new Haswell CPUs and better integrated graphics, these will just become little monsters of performance so I would wait till June if you want one of these.

If you just want a tablet with full windows 8/win 8 pro (rather than windows 8 RT) then the Dell Latitude tablet is the way to go (not the XPS tablet). It is essentially a mini PC for everything you need but I don't think you'd be able to play actual PC games. App games would be fine. It has full usb support so you can plug in hard drives etc into it.

Got a Sony S (old version tablet I know) free with my car.

It came with 100 episodes of spongebob for the kids. He watched a couple of them yesterday.

As soon as I charged it it started pestering me to "update" so i did. Now when I try to launch the nickelodeon app the episodes were on i get this message

error: this device is not authorised

Also the play store keeps closing for no apparent reason and 3 games we tried to install wouldn't play.

Apart from that android has been great. :)

Still I'm only at day 2

Totally agree I hate itunes luckily you never really have to use it these days with wifi syncing etc.

It sounds as though you just want them NOT to get an iPad, seeking for excuses.
I actually prefer how you have to use itunes, most people would say that the ecosystem is better.

iPads in my opinion are completely fine, cant really think of a flaw apart from the limiting OS which might be changed for iOS 7. iPhones on the other hand....
