Hi all,

Now I know for sure that whoosh type Dump Valves don't work well on the 1.8T engine (or at least that's what everyone keeps telling me)

...but how can you get the whoosh type sound then on this engine?

Blow off valve? How do these work?

Thanks

mmm, I think you're right in the sense that Vag 1.8T do not like BOV's, someone more informed will fill you in.

I fitted a Forge 007p diverter valve in reverse (1.8T Leon FR), which didnt add much sound, except for a chirping sound on throttle lift-off. Think of a canary making a chirping/whistling sound and you're 1/2 way there.

Worth it? Nah :)

VW 1.8T engines are designed with re-circ valves

Fitting a blow off or dump valve will just confuse the engine and cause it to loose power.

He will have trouble finding one, because its an incredibly bad idea.

In short, he cant have it.

Is this a 225 TT?

My friends TT had the 'whoosh' on his V reg 225 TT and he didn't install any aftermarket dump valve.

I have no idea, AFAIK it was the standard dump valve, it wasn't overly loud a la Subaru levels, but it was audible none the less.

because its venting air that the ECU is expecting to be fed back into the system via a recirc valve.

Dump Valve / Blow Off Valve / Vent to atmosphere all generate that wooshing noise by blowing the excess air out of the system. Which is the total opposite of what a re-circ valve does.

If he wanted one realy badly isnt it something a remap could sort out after installing it?

In reverse?

The noise you describe sounds like compressor stall if you ask me, meaning that valve is one way, and you've effectively just removed the recirc by fitting it in reverse?

Not good.

Most remaps alter the fuel tables. The system is designed for the air to go back into it, by totally removing it all via a dump valve I doubt a remap would be much help - at the end of the day the engine needs that air.

Induction kit is probably the best bet - on my car there is a very faint whoosh but an induction kit makes it really noticeable apparently. It's also a recirc valve I believe

Yes, the 1.8T is indeed designed for a Recirc valve, however you can buy a vent to atmos that part vents for the noise and feeds the rest back into the air intake.

Why? Whatever valve will be closed whenever the throttle is open.

Hmm, go read up about the engine.

Yep the ecu has counted the amount of air in, the amount its used and the amount its expecting back, if it doesn't get the air back it thinks a major boost leak has taken place (which is has) and the car will go into limp mode.

He needs to fit a 007p, change the intake pipe for the turbo then smooth and enlarge the holes at the bottom of the airbox.

Mine has no sound from stock but as anyone whos been on a hoon or meet with me will tell you it makes quite a loud 'whoosh' sound now.

Plus the induction kit with a remap took my engine from 150bhp stock to 180bhp!
