Hello all,

my friend moves to Uni on Saturday and starts her course Monday, problem is her loan hasn't come through yet, she sent off for it and got a confirmation letter but hasn't received anything, come Monday the Uni are going to ask for £3k worth of Tuition fees.

Can anyone suggest what to do? I've told her to keep ringing until she gets through to someone but I want to know if there is anything else she can do about it?

Thanks all.

For the first day all you need is a confirmation letter (at least thats all I need for belfast).

if she handed it in late, then it'll probably be towards christmas before she gets it, if she handed it in time, they can usually sort it out within a week or so. Let the university know and they will just wait until she gets it.

dont worry, tone of people are always in the same situation, i guess calling the loan co. would be the best start, followed by calling the uni finance department (they will be about on enrollment day if she want to talk to them then)

Has she enrolled at uni? I dont get mine untill the uni has confirmed to the SLC that I am infact there. I do this in freshers week. Could be different elsewhere though.

I've never had a student loan through before the first day of term, definately not before matriculation. She just needs to take a confirmation of the loan to uni when she matriculates, that should stop them asking for money.

What is required for us is a letter of confirmation (if you can confirm you are in process) then the fee is waived and you don't have to worry about it.

If you aren't able to confirm you are in process for student finance then you will have to pay a registration fee - which is £250.

What is the deadline for applying, if there is one? I haven't even sent in my application pack yet.

You can apply anytime in the year, just get it later if you apply late.

Thanks for the help guys :) I've forwarded this onto her and she appreciates it :)

She's stopped panicking now :D

Your friend has it easy. I am in the annoying position where:

the SLC requires me to register with my uni before they will send financial support notification and pay my loan to me

to register with uni, i need to have my tuition fees paid

to get my tuition fees paid, NHS student bursaries (who pay my fees) need my financial support letter off the SLC

Talk about ******* catch-22  Luckily I managed to get the SLC to send the notification to get the ball rolling, though it's now a month since my loan was due :(

You never get the loan until after you've started on your course.

As for paying them £3000 fees, as long as you've applied for the tuition fee loan this is paid directly to the university, so you don't need to worry about it at all.

Relax, everyone's in the same position!

If she starts on monday.... she will get it on monday :p and she shouldnt use her loan to pay for the tuition fees, normally you get a separate loan for them and Student finance pay them direct. (there not paying mine cos i applied for my loan last week :()

edit: just noticed the post above, and he is correct

This happens all the time, I go back on Thursday and only today did I recieve the letter showing how little I'm going to get, let alone the payment schedule.

I wish I knew why they think you are in need of less cash for your final year. Why is the loan reduced? If anything, it should be increased as your availability for paid employment is hugely reduced due to workload in the final year.

And you are at Uni for the same length of time!

I agree. The one year you really have to work solidly (bar year 2 I guess) and really don't want to be employed, they reduce it! Thankfully my Summer jobs have managed to bump me up quite a bit but it still sucks. I imagine yours, Fox, is even less as you live at home. SLC are morons.

There'll be no problem at all. She just has to go to the uni and tell them the score. Loans not coming through before term starts happens all the time. Providing she takes the confirmation letter with her; they will be just fine about it.

Because it doesn't cover you for the period over the summer holidays, is the theory.
