Hey guys, My gf wants a dslr.. what one would you guys recommend looking at? she has a max budget of £500 and wants a zoom lens to take pictures of birds and a bit of everything, plus being able to take on holiday in a few months.

Thanks in advance

It's probably best she goes and tries a few cameras, see what sits well in her hands. However if she sticks to Nikon or Canon she will have an easier time getting advice and finding used accessories.

If she wants to do birds she will need a longer zoom lens then the ones that typically come with most dSLRs. So looks at twin lens kits which typically includes an 18-55 & something like 70-300 or 50-200.

What about a Nikon D5000 18-55 and 55-200mm VR Twin Lens Kit? you can pick one up in the Jess shop for £500

If she has "girly" hands then she may appreciate a smaller, lighter camera like the Pentax k-x which can be had for the money no problem. It really is a matter of taste and preference at the price you're looking to pay.

I would suggest you make sure she gets a body she likes (even if that means at the time of pourchase you don't get both lenses or the full reach), get used to it and then spend more money later on good glass, which is built for purpose to what she actually ends up wanting to take photos of.

Second hand Canon 400/450D - It'll suit the typical small hands of a girl (assuming she has them) and they are going for bagaintastic prices now :)
