My GFs stealing my PC (again)...

...but she's giving me a pot of loot to replace it with this time. :D

The original Athlon-fx she's got is finally showing its age (or dying of embarassment because of the new Bulldozer) so she'll be pinching my rig to play Skyrim on as she doesn't like windows 7. Conseqently, I'm gonna' need a new one.

Since I've generally bought AMD in the past, I have a minimal idea about intel motherboard codes. Consequently I could so with a spec check from the experts.

The rig will mostly be used for gaming (Civ, Skyrim, Total War, Minecraft:p) spodding on the 'net and some occasional light graphics. I'll be using 3x 17" monitors @1280x1024 each and the water cooler is mainly for keeping it quiet although the overclocking space is a nice side effect. I also have NAS, so additional storage isn't an issue. I'll be re-using my mouse, keyboard and speakers. Basically a case and contents, looking to spend about £850 + windows 7 (which I may be able to buy cheap through work).

Will probably upgrade to SSD, bigger monitors and crossfire over time.

Questions:
Is it worth upping the PSU to 750W for crossfire in the future?
Is there any noticable difference between the Asus board above and this one - MSI Z68A-GD55-G3 ? I've always had good service from Asus motherboards and need a pretty convincing reason to change.
Is it worth paying the extra quid or so for a Retail DVD-rw to get the burning software? I've got some freebie stuff at work and it's rubbish.

Additionally, the PC heading under my GFs desk is a Phenom II 965BE, Asus M4N82E, 4GB DDR2 800MHz RAM, Sapphire HD5770, Corsair 750W PSU. The chip was the fattest quad the motherboard could take. And it has taken everything I've thrown at it without complaint, but would a cheap (c£50-75) motherboard and RAM upgrade be worthwhile or better waiting until it is necessary? GFs gaming at 1280x1024 - Dragon Age/Skyrim/Fallout.

yes, imo. I'm also xfiring 6950's, but I'm not waiting :)

I would pick up the Asus anyway.

Sure if you feel you need the software. I never burn anything so can't say.

Wait until it is necessary. If it still works, then don't fix what's not broken. And if it brakes, she can steal your new PC :)

If your budget is £850, you can always postpone the cooler till later. However, could be a problem if the motherboard cut out is not good enough to fit the cooler backplate without having to remove the motherboard from the case first.

Else, I would get a decent but quiet CPU cooler like above.

The second option is to go for the non windowed case for the Shinobi. It lacks a exhaust fan, but not a problem if you use a Kuhler.

Still over budget. Can be fixed if you can get win 7 on the cheap.

I would also recommend a case with good airflow for xfire. Like the Carbide 400R / 500R.

My recommendation would be to take the PSU out of your old rig and put the lower power one in that instead.
Also no point upgrading the old rig will be massively faster than an FX-51 as it is.

Thanks for the feeback guys.

I was looking at the Shinobi, but the Antec had the side vents over the graphics card bays without the window premium and has tool less fixings (great for regularly cleaning out the dust bunnies) not sure about Shinobi. I think the Carbides demands just a little too much budget from other places.

Budget was £850 for case and guts, with however much extra needed for a copy of Win 7. So all of olivier's builds were food for thought. Also looks like the Corsair Vengence RAM is a few quid cheeper at the minute.

yes, imo. I'm also xfiring 6950's, but I'm not waiting :)

Sadly, money says I need to wait. Still, one should power the pixels I currently have with ease.

And if it brakes, she can steal your new PC :)
Now you're just tempting fate....

I had considered, but the old 5770 I have is a thirsty beast (500W if I remember correctly). Add on a the 125W CPU and 10W or so for fans and drives and it's pushing close to 650.
