I see two bits of wood on top of each other, top one shorter than bottom one.

The grain gives it away on my first look.

Maybe try that ever ascending stairs pic.

Look at the left side - one on top of the other.
Look at the right side - they are side by side.

It's similar to the twisted triangle thing.

But then how is his finger flat with the top block yet somehow casting a shadow on the bottom block :p

If you're going for an optical illusion it has to be perfect in visuals otherwise you have to be told it's one :/

it's not meant to if the grain matched it wouldn't make any sense.
 
The grain looks fairly well matched to me.
Here is where i rekon the 2 images were merged:

it's a old school carpenters trick there is only and ever was 2 pieces of wood it's quite simple to do it's all about how the wood was cut and the angle of the photograph nothing more
