Right, Ive been meaning to produce a big post regarding my home, and the setup inside it, and i know there are a few members who have been interested in this.

You will have to bear with me on the technical side of things, ill try my best to explain what everything does but i didnt install everything let alone order it i just sat back and watched it all come together, but i shall try and do my best.

if anyone wishing to talk further my msn is theb0y14 (at) hotmail (dot) com

Ive decided to split the post into 3 sections, "Audio", "Visual" & "Network".

BACKGROUND,

The house was build 2 years ago, and the multimedia installation process took about a year. (contracter was a bit shabby).

We decided to cable the entire house as the frame went up, cable is a cheap as chips when building a house from scratch.

We wanted a fully networked house, with audio streaming into each room controllable by a remote, with discreet speakers. The ability to watch sky in everyroom, with full controllability. We also wanted the ability to expand the network in terms of technological advances.

AUDIO,

Under the stairs is where the heart of the audio system lies. We have a large rack which contains the following equipment. (In order of how they sit on the rack re: pic)

All products are under the "Linn Knekt" family.

Imerge Soundserver S2000:
This is where our music collection is stored. With 250gb of storage, we are able to rip music at top quality to the harddisk, will full album art and cd info, much like how you rip music to itunes.

The server supports 4 outputs, this means we are able to have music playing in up to 4 seperate rooms at the same time.

It also pumps out a visual display to a tv to display whats playing etc.

Kivor Linnk:
This handles all the "in and outs" from the audio network. From this all the room RCU's connect into, and all audio streaming goes out through it.

Linn Intersekt:
This unit controls the zones, we have 4 zones. (as there are four members of the family). I guess in a way it splits the bandwidth easilly into four parts, for example, i can go up to my RCU and select "Tom", select and play music of my choice independantly to what the other 3 zones are doing. And if i was two deselect "Tom", and go on to "Rhia" my bedroom would start pumping out whatever my sister was playing.

Linn Pekin:
This is a high performance AM/FM tuner, this is wired into the Intersekt meaning we are able to the radio on our RCU's and have full functionality such as scan, or scroll through pre-sets.

Linn Reciever 2i: (x2)
These are the amps, there are two downstairs and two in the attic. Each zone has an amp, and the amp powers the room in which the zone is being utilized.

You can also see a tft screen, this displays a visual representation of whats going on in the soundserver.

The turntable is connected to the soundserver and we are able to record vinyls straight onto the soundserver.
,

So youve seen whats under the stairs, whats next. Well, we need to be able to controll the music in each room.

In each room we have one of these :

img2911kg4.jpg

This gadget is a simple, yet effective way of controlling the soundservers output with the touch of a button.

With this i am able to select my zone, wether its zone "Tom", or from direct inputs in my room (e.g my pc, tv, ipod)

So i can click, "Where - Tom", "What - Select a album, song, artist", "Do, play/pause etc.
Its hard to explain how they work.. i can also controll bass/treble/volume etc.

This will then send the information back down to the units under the stairs, up to the amps, and the output will play wherever i am.

These i believe were the most expensive part of the system as each one has to be configured differently according to the room and the rooms layout.

In my room i have it connected to the system downstairs, but i also have the ability of connecting my own inputs, upto 3. As you can see below:

Speakers
Each room has upto 4 speakers. The speakers are also by linn, and they are the Custom 2k model 3-way Loud Speaker. There are discreet yet powerful which is what we wanted.

img2912py1.jpg

Specifications :

Frequency response 100 Hz – 20 kHz +/- 3 dB (passive & AKTIV)
Input impedance (passive) 6 Ω
Sensitivity 87 dB/W/m
Wiring options Single wiring, AKTIV
Drive units 16 mm soft dome tweeter
30 mm soft dome mid
101 mm screened bass unit
Mounting depth 92.5 mm
Weight 1.6 kg

In my opion they are very good, bass is clear and they can go very load...

Wireing

As you can see from the pic below, wiring was a complicated procedure.
You can see all the cables after leaving their unit they dissapear into the wall in the panel right there. They then lead to their coresponding room.

Here you can see an example of the cables in the attic, and the extra room amps on the panel. Colour coding the cables made life a lot easier.

more on the way..

Before i move onto the visual side of the house im going to quickly show a few rooms so you get a better idea of how they are set up and meant to work.

My Room

img2922ns9.jpg

So here you can see my setup.

I have my computer down the right side of my desk, and the Samsung LCD on the wall. (cables are behind the wall, we put the cables into the wall before the plaster went up.

You can see the audio inputs on the bottom right, from there i can plug in audio sources such as my pc and ipod. I then select which one i want to hear using the RCU on the wall.

The tv also has a vga cable going through the wall which ive got connected to my computer, so the tv acts as a second monitor to my pc. Usefull for watching films etc while using the pc at the same time.

img2924ud8.jpg

Heres a closer pic, notice my way of cooling the pc down... thing has serious cooling issues.

img2925is5.jpg

When installing everything, we thought it would be cool to add the music element into our bathrooms. Here if you look closely you can see a speaker in the ceiling. These are not as good quality as the main loadspeakers but they do fine for listening to music in the shower.

The music in the bathroom is simply controlled by an extender. Whatever is playing in my room can be outputted into the bathroom easilly using this control, more more basic than the other RCU :

Will do the lounge (movie room) & kitchen next.

Keep it coming your talking my "Lingo" :D

How is the interface between the intersect and the soundserver, so the RCU can select a track ?

edit, Ah Kivor supports non Linn interfaces ????

THE RCU is very basic but very functional.

You have 3 main buttons, the rest are things like volume etc.

"Where" "What" "Do"

"Where" - Select where you want the master source from, ie, my room, or the server downstairs.

"What" - say i select "main" (being the server) I then select which zone, in my case i would select "Tom"

(( if i select toms bed, i can then select audio input 1/2/3 ))

"Do" - Here is where i can select to search by artist, song, album etc and eventually select play.

does that answer the first question ?

Lounge

img2928zm6.jpg

This room is a little bit more complicated.

img2929im4.jpg

So we have the 42" Sony LCD, with sky plus.

The DVD player is by Linn, it iself is able to pump out more than one feed from its output. Using this we are able to watch a dvd on this player in either this room or the room next door (which i will show next).

The audio for the room is nice aswell, we have the center speaker, a Linn Trikan info

For surround speakers we have 4 of the ceiling speakers in each corner of the ceiling and angled towards the seating area.

img2930tg2.jpg

As you can see, cable tidying needs to occur behind here.
The sub is a Linn Sizmik more info

You can see how all the cabling dissapears into the wall.

any questions fire away, will post more tommorow.

Just one question. The impression I get is that the analogue amplifiers are all in a single location, and that the speakers are wired to them using rather long speaker cables. Is that correct?

Yes, each room has an amplifier. Downstairs there are two (kitchen and lounge) and upstairs in the attick there are 3, for the 3 bedrooms. You can see them on a panel in a pic up a bit. ^^
