Afternoon All

Long time viewer first time poster. I was thinking of building a new system, however, I am now tempted to just upgrade. I have an Asus AN8 – SLI Deluxe, AMD 64 X2 4800, 2 Gig or memory and 2 X 7600GT running in SLI.

I know that my current system is not the best going but I was wondering if dumping the 7600GT’s (particularly given the state of the Nvidia drivers for SLI). And moving over to a single 8800 GTX would be a good idea and do you think it would maximise my current rig?

Thanks Lots :)

I have virtually the same system as you(spec in sig) , get the GTX you won't regret it , I went from 7800GT's to a single GTX and the difference is phenomenal or if your patient you could wait and see what R600 and the Nvidia refresh(no doubt they will coincide) will be like. :)

i went from onboard graphics to a gtx. i win:p

honestly though, just get the best card your funds allow.that cpu isnt going to be aproblem for you and it'll still outpace everything else.

An X2 4800 with 2GB RAM is a great basis for a system! Of course everybody is banging on about Conroe, but that CPU will be fine for a long while to come. Slap a GF8800 in there and you'll be laughing.

I have an X2 3800+ @ 2.5ghz, the Deluxe like you, 2gb OCZ PC4000 platinum @ 1:1 and a GX2 @ 600/830 (gives similar performance to an 8800gts).

I upgraded from a 7800gt and play at 1680x1050 and really can't complain!

I'd go 8800 or R600/Nvidia refresh like LeeMc says! :)

Enjoy!

LeeMc, i am going to upgrade to a Opty 185 and a 8800 GTX from my 7800gt's. Just how big a difference was it for you? In real terms, ie games as opposed to benchies.

For a start I'm not a benchie freak at all , I'll run them when I get a new card or i'm setting up overclocks etc but thats not how I determine how good a card is , the only way to do that as you say is games.
At the moment I'm playing GTR 2 , TDU open beta , Fear Extraction point , Half life ep1 , CSS and just started playing Battlestations Midway , it will run all those games ridiculously smooth at the very highest settings except for Fear Extraction point and TDU (which is a beta and a poorly optimised one at that) which I have at 4x AA all the rest are 1900x1200 16xAA and 16x AF.
The 7800,s were good but in image quality alone(which is VERY noticably better) it was worth the upgrade , I've never had a card/cards that could easily play every current game available at its highest settings.
I'm not an Oblivion fan but did install it just to have a look and get the feel of it(not my type of game) but it looked beautiful and played very smoothly with 4xAA @ 1900x1200 averaging around 40-45fps , I got bored of it after a day so thats all the testing I did with Oblivion.
My GT's were volt modded and watercooled and also of course overclocked quite a lot 540/1.3 i think I got them too and I can honestly say the GTX is much much faster in every game I've played up to now , the drivers up to now have been a bit flakey and I had some probs with games early on now n then but with the 97.92's I havent had any problems yet.

Hope thats helps you out some :)
If ya want any more info just ask no probs

That's great. Thanks for that. Glad you mentioned GTR2 as i have just got that. Have you got Company of Heroes. If so how does it do on the built in benchie in the graphics options? I was really surprised just how much i had to turn the detail down on mine.

What's this TDU thing? I have seen that mentioned a couple of times now.

TDU is Test Drive Unlimited , its a fantastic IDEA for a game but a bit roughly implemented atm in more ways than just the unoptimised graphics , having said that it is still BETA so can't **** em off for that , thats the point of closed n open betas to find issues like this , I hope they sort it for the release cos it could be sooo excellent.
Have a gander at the "PC Games" section of the forum you'll find a long thread on there about it inc info on the closed and open betas.
Yeah I have CoH but I havent re-installed it yet after a format so can't remember exactly what I was getting on the benchmark but it played smoothly at 19x12 4xAA. :)

Many thanks to all who posted

Thanks a lot all. I have gone for a 8800GTX on your advice so all going well I will be looking forward to lots of high res gaming :p

Thanks again for some good advice.

I ran a similar system with a GTX for a while. Really nice combo. Don'y listen to anyone who bangs on about resolution etc - you'll want performance to spare, espessially with the new titles coming this year ;) Plus you can literally run every single title with full AF and loads of AA. Incredible quality with very little penalty.

The 8800 is one of the biggest performace leaps graphics cards have ever seen. You have to see it for yourself, its astonishing

Bear in mind the Vista 8800 drivers are not great at the moment, if you're using that OS.

As long as you are not going to be judging your rig by benching and instead want to max out your games then your rig will do just fine :D
