my i7 920 running ok

Those idle(?) temps are fine - especially if you're using the supplied cooler.

What are the load temps?

You cooler and idle temps are fine. It's the load temps that are the most important and what you should be most concerned about.

peaking about 81 c now do you think i need a better cooler, i now its rather hot weather at moment as well.those temps will go higher if i overclock it as well????

The i7s run hot but by the sounds of it you have only just started testing it under load. You need to let it run for an hour and monitor the temps - although i doubt they'll fluctuate much more.

Remember prime95 stresses the CPU to the nth degree - in day to day usage, even when playing games, the cpu will not be stressed as much.

80 degrees may seem high compared to your last chip but it's within tolerance. After the prime test play a few games and see what your temps average at.

What case cooling do you have?

Coolermaster RC-1000 Cosmos Silent Full Tower Case

Csse airflow shouldn't be an issue with the above case - unless the case fans aren't connected.

So I can only reiterate and 'add' to what i've said already:

Remember, prime95 stresses the CPU to the nth degree - in day to day usage, even when playing games, the cpu will not be stressed as much and therefore will not generate the same amount of continuous heat.

80 degrees may seem high compared to your last chip but it's within tolerance. After the prime test play a few games and see what your temps average at - they should average out a lot lower than the prime tests.

If you're still concerned you could resit the HS with some quility gunk (AS5 MX-2) - but you may find that your temps still don't drop that much when stressed under prime95.

But essentially, your temps are fine for an i7 chip when stressed under prime with an average thrid-party cooler attached - if i had the same setup i wouldn't be concerned.

would you change the cooler ???

No, as i think your temps are fine.

The only thing i would do is refit your present Cooler with a bolt-thru-kit (as the push pin method is a PITA) and apply some quality gunk. This will probably take a few degrees off your temps as, coupled with the quality gunk, it ensures that there is solid contact between the HS and CPU - plus it makes future refitting a lot easier.

I'll dig out a pic/link of the bolt-thru-kit for you - they only cost approx £8 from auction sites (OCuK don't sell them.)

EDIT: Here's a link to a thread with pics of the 'bolt-thru-kit' - link.

Im clocked to 3.2GHz and get 70-74 degrees with max load on coredamage about 70 degrees on prime95. This is with Titan Fenrir cooler.

So your 10 degrees hotter with no O/C but I wouldn't worry its within tolerance and the diff on my chip between no o/c and 3.2Ghz is barely anything in terms of temps (this chip loves low voltages!).
