My internet speed has been slow for the past 3 days.

I use TalkTalk internet broadband and I desperately want to convert to another broadband. I have been using 0.8Mb/s download speed and about 0.1Mb/s upload speed for 7 years but in the past 3 days, my internet connectivity in games like League of Legends and doing simple tasks like loading up my gmail would take forever or wouldn't connect at all. I used to get around 50 ping in LoL but now it spikes from 150 to 3000 ping every minute.

Context: My brother got an Ethernet cable for his PC downstairs where the router is located. I am upstairs and I connect via wireless connection. I can't play or do anything extremely basic and I am getting ****ed. When my brother is out, I get more better ping like 90 ping but I would still spike to 3000 ping every minute.

I want to ask my father if we can switch broadbands to something like Plus.net but do not possess the intelligence to decide and compare which is better.

I would go with Plusnet, TalkTalk I found can be heavily congested in busy areas which can great affect speeds and latency.

Is fibre not avaliable in your area?: https://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

If you're gaming you shouldn't be using wireless, ethernet will provide much better latency for gaming. Perhaps consider running a long cable, or if that's not possible, try powerlines.

Hey thanks for the reply :D

I researched about different internet providers and I found that plusnet is the best. TalkTalk is usually rated worst. I checked if fibre is available but it says WeightFibre is not available in your area. I was thinking of getting a powerline but after I hopefully change broadbands, I will consider buying a powerline.

One more question, is it easy to change internet providers. Do I need to change routers or something?

They will provide you with a new router. Honestly TalkTalk's router is rubbish anyway, I find the wireless very unreliable on it.

As for changing providers, it's very easy now. All you need to do is contact Plusnet and they will do everything for you. They will post the new router to you, and a date of when everything changes over. Once the date arrives, when you notice your TalkTalk connection is down, it usually means it's time to swap the routers around and once you do that, the new Plusnet connection should be up and running.
