I'm not very good at IP stuff but If I have an ntl/virgin broadband with an IP number of :

82.19.XX.XXX

How long do I keep that IP number...all the time....What I am after is finding my IP number for last october will it be the same as now....if not is there a way to find what it was...

thx.

If you've got a static IP you'll have the same one. If you have a dynamic IP it'll be different. If you want to maintain external access to your home network you can set up a no-ip server that doesn't mind having a dynamic IP.

Hmmm, it depends. With NTL it's not technically static, but since August when I started a new contract in my current house, the IP has remained the same.

If you don't power cycle the modem it will remain the same. As for wanting to know what it was last October you won't be able to find out, even asking tech support they won't be able to find out, it's basically only following reports of abuse or court orders that someone would investigate it to that level.

I turn my modem off every day and I have had the same IP address for over 6 months so far.

Some IP addresses have stayed for over a year.
