My laptop is buggered, any way of fixing it?

I turned my laptop on today and the fan spins up to what must be 100% but the HDD activity light stays off and the screen stays blank.

I was wondering what I should do, and if it's possible to fix it myself?

Try reseating the RAM. After that remove the hard drive and see if it reaches the POST screen?

out of interest, who makes it? I just made a post about a similar issue with a dropped toshiba.

It's an HP pavilion and I've basically given up on it now.

I don't suppose it has an nvidia chip in it? They have a lovely habit of overheating, best fixed by resoldering the gpu. Could be other things, that's just a particularly common one.
