Hi everyone,

I've had my Samsung 700G7A for just over 2 months now and its a really fast laptop.

But recently it's been freezing when i open a program...sometimes for over a minute...nothing works, no keyboard or mouse.

I hit ctrl+alt+delete and I get a screen saying "preparing security options" It goes away after a minute.

I've done a virus and spyware scan but nothing was found.

Any help?

The recurring error, "Preparing Security Solutions" that has been surfacing on your systems is NOT a valid Windows 7 error. It is a message that is being generated by a virus that has been cleverly engineered to masquerade as a valid system program.
This virus has been so cleverly devised that normally effective anti-malware tools like MalwareBytes have not been useful in detecting/removing the problem.

PUT SYSTEM SWEEPER ON A USB STICK
System Sweeper, https://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweeper, allows you to start an infected PC and perform an offline scan to identify and remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware. System Sweeper is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.
NOTE: A fine tutorial on the System Sweeper is:
How to use the Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper

Download System Sweeper (about 576 kB):
https://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweeper

Insert 256 MB or larger USB stick into a usb port.
Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
Choose the option to install to USB.
Caution: The install program will format the usb stick.

The install program will download about 200 mB more.
After the install is finished, leave the stick in the usb slot.

Run the program you downloaded once again.
This 2nd run, and any subsequent runs, will download the very latest anti-virus definitions (about 60 mB).

To keep System Sweeper up-to-date, simply reinsert the usb stick and run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.

The initial, full scan by System Sweeper can easily take several hours, but subsequent quick scans will be shorter.
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.

The results of System Sweeper will be in:
\Windows\Standalone System Sweeper\Support as one or more files with a LOG extension which can be viewed with Notepad.

Well I tried the system sweeper scan offline, but it did not bring up anything.

Also i tried to run seatools but it does not recognise my hard drive at all when I boot up the program. I have a crucial m4 128gb ssd.

Don't know what else to do.

Ahh it may be because HDD is set to ACHI in the BIOS, if you set it to IDE it should detect it but make sure you change it back before you load it into windows again! lol.

Another simple test is memtest86, worth a go really...

There used to be a test called Passmark Burn In Test which you can get a demo version which runs 15 mins at a time and you can test numerous components at once, may be worth a shot... :)

Thanks for the advice Stormster...I did the long test on seatools, and it passed with no errors...also ran memtest86 for a few hours and it passed that aswell :(

I'll try passmark burn in test later.

Maybe it would be worth reinstalling Windows?

ish1 try installing the original samsung hard drive that came with the laptop (that has windows on it) and see if you get the same problem. Also have you made sure you have turned on your page file and set it to the 2nd hard drive too and not the SSD.

The freezing as you mention sounds like a hard drive problem to me and have seen this many times when drives are either on the way out or not setup right.

Ok I changed the pagefile to the 2nd hard drive, but I still get the freezing and "preparing security options" screen.

I will put the original hard drive back in and see how it goes.

ish1 any luck swapping the drives back ? Has that cured your problem ?. Also can you stick a screenshot up of the message you get "preparing security options" that sounds fishy to me and could be a virus, trojan or malaware. That message you see does not sound normal to me.

Sorry for the late reply...i was on holiday and had no internet for 3 weeks! :(

anyway the screen that says "preparing security options" is the exact same screen you get when you shut down your pc and you get the "shutting down" screen with that circle that goes round and round...except it says preparing security options

like the following:
