My Line Attenuation

I'm with BT Broadband "Unlimited" package, 3MB download (apparently). According to my Netgear DG834G router, I have a line attenuation of 56db. Being a mere 2km from my exchange I would consider that as being quite high, and because of this I can't get any faster speeds for the forseeable future. Does anyone think that this is a little high for the distance away from my exchange? My line is "only" 20 years old max as that was when this housing estate was built. Is there something else that could be wrong other than the line being very bad?

It's also worth mentioning that 50% of the time I get a phone call my internet connection willl completely cut out for 2 minutes. Some days it doesn't happen, sometimes it happens more often than not. This problem has arisen ever since I got upgraded from 1MB download to 3MB about 3 months ago. I would phone BT up but I don't fancy being put through to India.

Thanks,
Alex

You may be 2km from your exchange, but the route your line takes under/over the ground makes your line quite a lot longer than that. It's a similar situation where I live - I'm 2.5 - 3km from the exchange in a straight line but my actual line length must be closer to 5km.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4832 kbps 832 kbps
Line Attenuation 41 db 12.5 db
Noise Margin 15 db 13 db

Those my stats and it says am 2.12km from exchange and best speeds i manage is 4mb download, i have the exact same router as you btw.

If you getting over 50db i would say you must be a good distance away or your line is terrible quality.

It could be down to a number of things...

Hvae you tried connecting via your master socket (taking front plate off, thus removing any type of extensions, and plugging the router/modem there?

Where did you get 2km from exchange from? if its from samknows.com that is a straight line and not a true indication of the length of the pair of wires from the exchange

Also you could be connected via aluminum wire for some of the distance which has a higher loss rate due to its physical properties etc

it could be any number of things, but i'd try the first thing i mentioned first if you have extensions

1db attenuation, now that's impressive :) Sure beats the 55 or so db I got on my phone line when I had ADSL.
