hi

yesterday me and my carer (P.A) took my 6990 to my local computer shop has I know the guys there, i asked them to open it and clean it out. but first I said are you sure you know what your doing with graphic card, he said yes I've done this many times, I said ok but make sure you don't break it. so I watched him opening it which took a good 30min all that was ok, then him and another guy started cleaning it out, he removed the heat sink, fan to clean them, removed pads, thermal compound, that took a good 45min that went ok. now this is where the stupid part is. when it was time to put it back together he had to replace the pads so he did that and put some thermal compound on both GPU's, (but I thought to my self the pads look to thick) so I said are you sure the pads are ok for this, he said yeah. so I said ok. he put it all back together, when he finished I thought to myself it doesn't look right, but I went with it. from start to finish it took 1hour 50min~ anyway so I bought both guys a mcdonalds so say thanks for doing it. when I got home I got my mum to put it back in my pc, then turned it on and after about 5 seconds the graphic card fan span up to like 100% and I said turn it off has something is wrong. so I got my mum to remove the graphic card and open it, and it opened so easy due to the heat sink wasn't even touching the GPU's due to the pads being to thick. so I told her to remove the pads then put a little ocz freeze thermal compound on the ram, bridge, vrm's chips then close it. I told her to put it back in my pc, turned it on, fan is ok, and so far it seems ok.

so the two guys got a mcdonalds (2 happy meals) out of me for nearly breaking my graphic card.

if I wasn't disabled I would have did it myself, has I knew how to do it.

Well she knows her way around a computer, sounds like my ideal woman :P

But seriously, I was pretty impressed she knew what she was doing.

Also, you should have cleaned the card out yourself. It's not hard and theres probably more than a few guides on youtube.

Lastly I thought you were trolling due to the mcdonalds bit :)

she doesn't know anything about computers. basically she's my hands, I tell her what to do / how to do it

Did you pay them other than buy them a happy meal? Because conversely they did 2 hours of work for £1.50 an hour if that was their only payment....

Local computer shops deal in dusty old Packard Bell PCs, I wouldn't like to take anything remotely high end to them :D

Frenzy, have you not seen the videos gareth posted of his gaming setup?

no

2 happy meals was £4.xx something, total. they didn't want paying has they know me well. because I sell a lot of parts to them. but still that wasn't the point. they nearly broke it.

It's probably worth mentioning to them that you'd had a problem. That way, they might know to not make the same mistake next time.
that's what i'm going to do today with my carer (P.A.), she's coming at 11pm..

but tbh I don't think it'll make much differents.

they bought a all in pc touchscreen from a customer for £60 because they said the touchscreen was broke but it turn out that the screen only needed a clean, now they selling it for £350

How are the temps looking now? Do you have any monitoring software like Afterburner so you can check on the cores and VRM temps?

So basically they're just another little dodgy independent computer shop, I'd have a word but then just mark it down to experience and not use them again.
I imagine there's plenty of people on here from around leicester that wouldn't mind helping you out doing quick jobs like that for a couple of beers.

I use afterburner to monitor the cores while gaming and gpu-z to monitor the VRM temp.

the idle temp is slightly higher 5c, but the load temp has gone down 6-8c. not sure why i'm getting a higher idle temp.

Really it just needed a good brush down to losing the dust and a good blast of air all over, give your case a spring clean while your on, sounds like a right micky mouse out fit, stay away.

Right if you have to move your PC to clean it or work on it always make sure you have it plugged into a socket+power supply switched off. To keep the case earthed helps to prevent damage from static electricity from you body. Touch the case before you start which helps to remove any static electricity before you start to clean or work on your case

Just get a 2" paint brush get some electictians tape, wrap it round the metal shroud that holds the bristles in place to insulate it. Give the inside of your case a good LIGHT brush over fans, mobo, memory and them use a can of compressed air to blow all the dust out the case, job done.

Basicly thats it you have spring cleaned your case, do it at least twice a year more if dust builds up quickly.

Sound like cowboys to me, i'd stay clear and unless your graphics card is ancient and you are overclocking like mad there's really no need to strip it and replace thermal paste and the such. Quick blast with some compressed air will clear 90% of the crap out.

Maybe it's a sign of me getting old but McDonalds sounds like a punishment :p

I'm sure your 6990 will hold out now it's been correctly reassembled, best of luck anyway.
