My Log Burner...

Thread revival!!

How do people clean their stove on the outside?

Is there some type of polish or cream you can get?

Also those with granite hearths how do you clean and polish it?

Quite pleased I found this thread. My new place has a log burner and am a bit apprehensive about using it safely. Am really looking forward to it though, the vendors had it going when we viewed it and it was lovely! Will be annoying you guys with lots of questions when the times comes :P

I wouldn't wait till the time comes - Get it working now to be sure it works properly - get flue swept and start getting some wood in - You can never start to early collecting wood of any description.

At one point in my life I had access to a closed down kitchen company and had loads of worktops and things - -They burn really well but stink a bit but who cares if it warms you up.

Our next log run is next Monday - Wife's dentist is very close to log suppliers.

It was shown to us working about 2/3 weeks before we move in so think it should be ok. Will get the flue cleaned and it all checked before first use though to make sure. As for fuel, our vendors sold us a mahoosive stack of wood outside in the garden and also 9 large bags of coal so that should be ok for a little while :)

I think it's just a case of needing how to learn how to use it safely etc. Things like when to close the air vents on it to put it out when we are all going to bed and things like that. :D It's probably really simple but I am nervous that I am going to burn the house down lol.

We took down a few trees this year. Reckon we have ~5,000 9" logs. You can have too much!! :D

I only live down road from you in Shropshire - I will pop up with my trailer and take some off your hands if you can't cope. - just as a favour like :):)

Black leading, zebo that sort of thing just brush it on iirc. Assuming its one of the black ones, if its one of those chromed shiny things, no idea.

Parents used to have one, theres nothing quite like a real fire. Did consume a fair amount of logs though. Lived on a farm so no real shortage of them but they do require stacking to dry a green log is no use to anyone. Used to heat the hot water and radiators too. Coal got too hot honestly the room would roast.

Only downside is its not instant it will take a good hour at least to get some decent heat in the room and can be a bit of faff to get going, not something you're that keen on when you get home from work tired.

This is my stove.

I work in the installing trade so i get to play with quite a few but this little Heta Inspire 40 is awesome. Gas flame like control, defra approved and close distances to combustibles.

Also offered with a white enamelled door :D

Sat on a bit of 35mm Slate 840x840 with a another bit 840x600 on the rear to complete the look.

Whats the best way of choosing a burner? Will be looking at getting one in the coming months but i'm baffled by the sheer variety of them.

Any particular brands which are better than others? What size do I go for etc? Mind boggling.

3 main factors are output, fuel and defra

Output - there are calculators online to give you an idea. Just keep in mind these usually don't account for insulation of property, number of windows etc. Also 5KW is the cut off for a ventilation (unless your in a new build)

fuel - do you want it wood burning only or multifuel (coal and/or wood)

defra - also known as smoke exempt, required if your area is smoke controlled. Your local council can answer this if your unsure

After this, it's aesthetics, do you want modern, traditional. Freestanding or inset etc.

@Rossi ive seen your build log and 5KW is good enough for yours

Will you be using it to heat the water and rads? If yes I would recommend going mutifuel.

Also after looking at your house thread I would go for a classic looking stove instead of those super contemporary types.

You soon be savaging any bits or wood and logs you come across to improve your wood stash!!

It wont be heating water or rads or anything, just purely to kick out some heat into the room in the winter months!

And yep deffo wont be going for a modern looking one, something a bit more traditional but I just don't know where to start. Its a fairly open space downstairs so wanted something that would give off a bit of decent heat but not something that feels like it is going to give me a tan when i'm sat on the couch!

Cheers mate. I'll keep the 5KW in my mind when looking for one!
